Don't want new tech breakthrough in India: Obama

Reiterating his administration's commitment to stay way ahead of the global race in clean energy, US President Barack Obama has said that he does not want to have new technological breakthroughs and manufacturing taking place in India and China.

"We're in a competition all around the world, and other countries -- Germany, China, South Korea -- they know that clean energy technology is what is going to help spur job creation and economic growth for years to come," Obama said in his address to the workers at an Allison Transmission plant in Indiana.

"That's why we've got to make sure that we win that competition.

"I don't want the new breakthrough technologies and the new manufacturing taking place in China and India," asserted the US President, adding that he wants all those new jobs in the United States of America, with American workers, American know-how, American ingenuity.

"We're going to have a lot of jobs in the service sector because we're a mature economy, but America's economy is always going to rely on outstanding manufacturing, where we make stuff, where we're not just buying stuff overseas but we're making stuff here, and we're selling it to somebody else," he said.

"This is also where a clean energy economy is being built.

"This is the kind of company that will make sure that America remains the most prosperous nation in the world,” Obama said.

I guess they could arm your worst enemy, so that you spend all your time defending against them, and less time competing on the global stage.

He does not say he wishes to stop it. He wishes america to stay ahead of the game by coming up with better products. Healthy competition.

Well Obama will say alot things.. surely. But its nature who rules. For centuries India and China has dominated the world, but then things turned and India/China were among the last. Now again Things are changing.
Ok even if we stop looking at nature/natural cycle. Can Obama make the MacDonald kind super interested into higher studies in a day? or in a year?? By the time American's feels the real heat, India and China would be already inventing things at front level.

I think as a US president he is right to be concerned that US may lose technology edge to others.
Good to see such a president, lucky america.

Not any times soon, and frankly Obama in my opinion hypes India up to much. India I think isn't in the stage where it can be a huge competitor in basically any field to USA. Maybe in 20 years hype India all you want, not now.

India is just the new kid on the block.

In that case,he should have said something like,"I would like to see US ahead in the race than any other country".It sounds like the US President is planning embargoes to stop technical progress ,in order to keep the competitors away...entirely missed the point of healthy competition.

amrica already lost High technology production output to China in 2009 when China reached $380 billion and U.S stood at $290 billion.. so the competition of quantity HTP was lost to China it is just matter of time to lose the quality side to us in near future``:D

We are doing poorly, when it comes to electronics, semiconductor chips.Look around.World's most of the market for Computer processors roughly divided between Intel and AMD and both are US based companies.
China did have some success in this field, but that is yet to transform in to a commercial success.

"I don't want the new breakthrough technologies and the new manufacturing taking place in China and India,...."

Jeez, that is kinda offensive to Asians.

I agree, competition is important. That is the beauty of Capitalism.

That is a complement, as asians have not arrived really in technological innovation scene yet, and still americans think so.

Why do you think they are "hyping" us up?

It is all realpolitik. They don't want their relative power in the world to continue declining.
