Don't blame Pakistan, Haqqanis were your 'darlings' at one time: Asif tells US

Pakistan refuses to take the blame for the Haqqani Network and other alleged militant outfits, reminding the United States that these 'terrorists' were considered the 'darlings' of the White House up until a few decades ago.

Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif, who is attending the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, made remarks to this end at the Asia Society forum on Tuesday.

"Don't blame us for the Haqqanis [the Haqqani Network] and don't blame us for the Hafiz Saeeds [referring to the head of banned Jamaatud Dawa]. These were the people who were your darlings just 20 to 30 years back. They were being dined and wined in the White House and now you say 'go to hell Pakistanis because you are nurturing these people'."

Further clarifying Islamabad's position, Asif said: "It is very easy to say Pakistan is floating the Haqqanis and Hafiz Saeed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. They are liabilities. I accept that they are liabilities, but give us time to get rid of them because we don't have the assets to match these liabilities and you are increasing them [our liabilities] further."

He said that Pakistan is ready to work with the United States for effective management of the Afghan border to stop terrorist infiltration and to facilitate a peace settlement in Afghanistan.

In the past, the US has accused Pakistan of not taking significant action against the Haqqani Network. Washington claims the militant outfit has been operating out of "Pakistan-based safe havens" to threaten US and Afghan forces in Afghanistan.

'Scapegoating Pakistan is neither fair nor accurate'
Speaking at the forum, Asif further stressed that there was no military solution to the festering conflict in Afghanistan. “Scapegoating Pakistan for all the Afghan ills is neither fair nor accurate,” Asif said.

“This will only help forces that we are trying to fight collectively,” he remarked.

Pakistan, he said, had in the past done all it could to facilitate a political settlement in Afghanistan, making sure that Pakistani soil was not used against any country.

In his opening remarks, Khawaja Asif also covered Pakistan’s relations with India, the Kashmir dispute, counter-terrorism measures and the country’s economic progress.

Asif said Pakistan has a “larger stake” in seeing the return of peace and stability in Afghanistan than any other country, having suffered grievously from the conflict and instability across the border.

“We are mindful of the strong desire in the US to bring the ‘long war’ in Afghanistan to an end,” the minister said. “We support this objective wholeheartedly and are ready to help in any way we can to achieve peace and stability in Afghanistan,” he offered.

He, however, made it clear that there were obviously clear limits to what Pakistan could do.

“We cannot take responsibility for Afghanistan’s peace and security and be asked to achieve what the combined strength of some of the most powerful and richest countries could not accomplish,” he told the audience.

“Effective border management, frankly, is the key,” the minister said, adding: “More needs to be done on the Afghan side of the border where terrorist elements are finding easy safe havens.”

“We are keen to work with the US in effectively managing the Afghan border and in facilitating a peace process to the extent we can."

He went on to say: “The emergence of new threats, including Da’esh demands ever greater coordination and stronger partnerships between like-minded countries to put up a united front to counter these dark forces of exclusion and extremism.”

Tensions with India
Talking about Pakistan's sour relations with India, he said that a new initiative was needed to bring India and Pakistan to the negotiating table. He stressed the need to discuss all issues, including the decades-old Kashmir dispute — the main source of tension between the two countries.

"Peace in the neighbourhood is impossible to achieve unless relations with India improve," he said. "Pakistan reached out to India to seek normalisation of relations and resolution of all disputes through dialogue and engagement, but India did not reciprocate," he added.

“The unprovoked violations on the LoC [Line of Control in Kashmir] and the working boundary, escalating political rhetoric, excessive use of force against unarmed civilians in occupied Kashmir and harassment of minorities, particularly Muslims in India, do not bode well for peace, reconciliation and dialogue in South Asia,” highlighted the minister.

Pakistan is ready to work with India to seek peaceful resolution of all disputes and to create an environment of peace and stability allowing the people of the two countries to realise their aspirations of prosperity and development, he said.

Souring relations with Trump's America
Asif's remarks come amid soaring tensions between Islamabad and Washington. Last month, US President Donald Trump, announcing his South Asia policy, lambasted Pakistan for providing safe havens to "agents of chaos."

Pakistan's response to Washington has remained stern and Islamabad has denied the existence of safe havens in the country.

Over the past week, as world leaders traveled to New York for the UN General Assembly, tensions between Pakistan and India, too, were brought to the fore with Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj terming Pakistan an "export factory for terror."

Pakistan maintained that Swaraj's statement had betrayed her country's hostility towards its neighbour and maintained that India was pursuing a policy of state-sponsored terrorism.

Need time to get rid of liabilities Hafiz Saeed, LeT: Pakistan
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com...z-saeed-let-pakistan/articleshow/60859370.cms

NEW YORK: Pakistan Foreign Minister Khwaja Muhammad Asif has admitted that Lakshar-e-Taiba (LeT) and its leader Hafiz Saeedare liabilities to Islamabad and that it needs time to get rid of them.

"It is easy to say that Pakistan is supporting Afghanis (terrorists), Hafiz Saeed and Lakshar-e-Taiba," he said here on Tuesday.

"They are liabilities... I accept they are liabilities. But give us time to get rid of these liabilities because we do not have the assets to manage those liabilities. You are increasing the liabilities further" by harping on them, he said. .....................................

Good performance by the FM. He earned his pay. Well done !

On the contrary my friend :) The esteemed FM should understand that they may have been darlings of the US but not anymore and thus change is needed. Even a layman understand that there are no permanent enemies or friends, its all about interests. Right now Talis are not in the interest of the US, Pakistan either needs to stick with them and be on the receiving end of the US or ditch them.

No place for emotions and bringing the past, your excellency FM!

When a country is under foreign duress like Pakistan is - it is important to be bipartisan. If you see good from any party, group show appreciation for it. Don't let parochialism trammel your thinking. I saw FM Asif's full interview with Asia Society and I was most impressed. Frankly I have no idea as to his domestic political standing but he is certainly performing well as FM. Let us all support him in what are trying times. He is certainly better then thsat sifarshi Pakistani ambassador in US Aziz who needs sacking.

A senior Afghan legislator revealed that the US helicopters have transferred a large number of ISIS terrorists to the province of Nangarhar in the Eastern parts of the country.[/paste:font]

(FNA) -- Last week, the US military helicopters transferred over 50 ISIS fighters to Barabad region of the town of Behsoud in Nangarhar province, Zahir Qadir said.

He also disclosed that a container full of military equipment was also delivered to the ISIS terrorists in Nari Obeh region of Nangarhar province.

Qadir called the US as the actual murderer of Afghan people, urging the government to pursue the issue.

Nangarhar was among the relatively calm provinces in Eastern Afghanistan but the Taliban and ISIS have recently increased their activities in some parts of the province in recent years.

This comes as an anti-ISIS operation is underway in Nangarhar to eliminate the presence of ISIS affiliates in this province.

The operations are currently being conducted under the name of Hamza operations which was launched a few months ago to suppress the loyalists of the terror group in this province.

MP Zahir Qadir says government could collapse if evidence presented to support his claim

By KHAAMA PRESS - Wed Dec 02 2015, 3:42 pm

Haji Zahir Qadir, first deputy of the Lower House of Parliament or Wolesi Jirga who has been accusing the National Security Council (NSC) for supporting the Islamic State or Daesh says government could collapse if he presents documents do support his claim.

He had a CD in his hand during Wednesday’s session and said that he has conditions to unveil the proof because this is an “international issue”.

“Haji Zahir Qadir is concerned, incase evidences are presented, government would collapse and I don’t want that,” he said.

Qadir added that he would show the evidences to certain people at a certain time because he does not want division of Afghan nation. “I want one nation,” he said.

However, the National Security Council has rejected Qadir’s claim calling it a “conspiracy”.

Ministries of defense and interior have also rebuffed the accusations over the government.

After Qadir first brought up the issue, the Minister of Interior Noor-ul-haq Olomi and Afghanistan’s Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Qadam Shah Shahim called the comments as “irresponsible”.

On the contrary my friend :)
No worries. Just because we are from opposite side of the fence does not mean we can't discuss with utmost respect.

Pakistan either needs to stick with them and be on the receiving end of the US or ditch them.
As long as Pakistan does not end up with somebody like that big mouthed bagpipe Musharaf Pakistan will and can withstand US pressure.

There are some brutal hard facts your overlooking. Do you think the world would agree to fix Afghanistan by following Trump if the cost was going to be ten Afghanistans? Think about that. Sort one Afghanistan out but make ten Afghanistans in Pakistan with nukes thrown in to add to the coctail?

No US Presidency and I don't care who it is - is going walk in with one Afghanistan but on leaving have ten Afghanistans in Pakistan. Therefore the neogotiating space is limited. After lot of bluster and acting tough Trump is going to leave Afghanistan for the next administration to sort out.

It was a very passionate appeal by ur FM, even convincing to the point even felt sorry for pakistan.
Yeah, they were used, but it was the stupidity of the leaders who gave the services.
For short term gains, they destroyed the whole ethos of pakistan.
Now the monster has grown so powerful, even the good intentioned ones cannot risk stopping it.
You guys continue to use these assets who have now become liabilities. They are not giving any returns, no matter what u guys say out loud, but u know u havent achieved anything. Not in afghanistan, not in kashmir.
You could have achieved so much more if u didnt use these assets of urs.
Eg. Agra summit would have solved kashmir issue, afghanistan would have been a stable country and the refugees would have gone back.
Now ur citizens, get radicalised and come to die in the streets of kashmir or mumbai. Its ur guys getting killed.
Always get the others fighting among themselves is the smart move, not send ur men to die.
