A 14-year-old girl in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh who was being raped by two men was rescued from further trauma by her pet dog. The dog bit one of the accused who was pinning her down, enabling her to raise an alarm and forcing the accused to flee.
The accused, who are habitual offenders of the area were later arrested.
Vipin Tamrakar, inspector-in-charge of the Moti Nagar police station, said that the incident happened in the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday (August 18-19) but the victim did not report the matter till Sunday fearing a backlash from the accused.
Tamrakar said that on the night of the incident, the minor girl was asked by her grandmother to get hay from the adjoining barn so that it could be burned to drive out mosquitoes -- a method common in rural India to deal with mosquitoes.
When she went out of the house, she was forcibly picked up by Reshu Ahirwar and his friend Puneet. Both of them were in an inebriated state and carried her to a deserted place not very far from her house. Puneet covered her mouth to prevent the minor from shouting for help while Reshu forced himself on her.
Just then, the girl's pet dog came up and bit Puneet on his leg forcing him to cry out in pain and release his grip. The girl managed to extricate herself and raised an alarm by shouting.
The accused fled from the spot and the family members arrived on the scene. For a day or so the family couldn't make up their minds whether to report the matter or not, worried as they were about repercussions from the accused.
The accused were recently booked for alcohol smuggling and are out on bail.
On Sunday when the victim finally reported the matter, the accused were arrested and booked for rape under the POCSO Act. A medical examination of the victim has confirmed rape.
