Originally due to be retired in 2016, Ark Royal will instead be decommissioned by late 2010 or early 2011, as part of the Navy restructuring portion of the 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review. After Invincible was decommissioned in 2005, and with the retiring of Illustrious expected in 2014,

The Sea Harrier aircraft was withdrawn early from Royal Navy service in March 2006 and replaced in the short term by the Harrier GR9

With the withdrawal of the Royal Navy's Sea Harrier in 2006, the RAF's Harrier fleet is tasked with the missions that it used to share with those aircraft. In 2006, the GR9 also entered service with the Fleet Air Arm when the first former Sea Harrier squadron reformed. The GR9 was expected to stay in service at least until 2018, when the first F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) was due. However, following the Strategic Defence and Security Review, it was announced on 19 October 2010 that the Harrier would be retired in 2011 and that the Eurofighter Typhoon and the F-35C would become the main strike aircraft for the RAF.[7][8] On 24 November 2010, the Harrier made its last ever flight from a carrier, incidently also the last flight from the carrier HMS Ark Royal (R07) before retirement.[9] The RAF Harriers are due to be retired before the 31 March 2011.[10]
