Does India really need Russia’s ‘Backfire’ bomber?

As far as I last recall, no. Where is @Abingdonboy hiding? He has started assuming proportions to Rajnikant ...... springing up when least expected otherwise not seen around...
If not then how good is the plane at finding targets and neutralising enemy ships while operating alone since it's mentioned in the article that usually these planes will overwhelm ship's defence by launching multiple missiles but if India acquires them it'll be a very small quantity and would often would work alone if not in pairs.
Also how would it perform against capital ships say an enemy aircraft carrier which will be with it's escorts and would be able to easily handle any salvo of missile fored by a pair of Tu 22's?

Answer Rukmini and data linking thereof for maritime domain awareness. Integrated to OCEANSAT .... Don't know how far that's been achieved in Tupolevs.

If I recall the data sharing between IL38 and P8I is being done though there were some kinks which needed ironing out. What I do not know nor am supposed to know :fie:

@PARIKRAMA I assume you did the honors to the delinquent who persists in trolling? Have reported his attempts again.

Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) has delivered the Indian-designed Data Link II for the P-8I. Data Link II is a communications system that enables exchange of tactical data and messages among the Indian Navy aircraft, ships and shore establishments.

More on that: http://www.bel-india.com/?q=Data-Link-Airborne

and

Avantel’s mobile satellite system where INSAT satellites based mobile satellite services with advanced microwave, digital wireless communications and signal processing products for military and commercial markets.

Exactly my point bro. There is commonaility and thus inter-operability across all Indian Mil platforms (ground stations, fighters, transports, AWACS etc).

This often goes unappreciated but it is a real advantadge for the services and will aid them immensly during operations.

The backfires were there before ( on lease) now on sale.
The article has some flaws , IAF was never interested rather IN.

Yes exactly , gone are those days when armed forces had to blindly use the Russian subsystem .
The Tu 's are going to be game changer for the IN . It has been under the plans for quite some time, and they will use the already existing base in two coasts.

With "300 Km" ranged Brahmos, I am sure this will send required signals to desired audience. 4 is too low a number. However probably Russians are not ready to sell more.

Are they even making these bombers any more?

Indian obsession with brahmos is amusing. Why do you want to integrate a new missile for a purchase of very small number of aircraft ? Considering missiles specially made for the platform and role is fine by any means (Kh-32/Kh-22/Kh-15). Brahmos simply does not bring anything to the table other than additional weight and integration cost.

Not making but deep upgradation ..Kazan aircraft plant started modernizing supersonic long-range bombers Tu-22M3..
Its being upgraded in two stages. There are 12 unfinished frames available which Kazan can complete it . basically this deep modernisation is rebuilding the planes from inside out with new radar, avionics and sensors. The on board combat management system is also upgraded and whatever technology of yesteryears is replaced by technology available today.

Initially Russia said they will upgrade 30 but now the number planned is beyond that. Old frames life extension is given to 40 years.

If India is serious and its a big IF then the 12 unfinished airframes can be of interest with ..

Some more pics of upgradation here http://gelio.livejournal.com/215362.html

One way distance to Seychelles is 3100 km approx.
so thats a bit over estimated but with aerial refuelling of course its possible.

No senior!

While the combat radius of this bomber is 2400 KM, the ferry range of this Tupolev beast is 6800 KM.
Depends upon the mission role. If no carpet bombing is required, It can hit Seychelles by being lean, mean & lighter. While the empty weight is 58,000 kg, the MTOW is more than double = 124,000 kg. Out of which free fall bombs are its max load of weapons. By reducing the weight penalty, it can fly back on its own internal fuel. No mid air refueling prescribed either.

India's threat preception is heavily focussed to IOR and China and we are keen to develop our power projection beyond the IOR hence Aircraft carriers are there so Why "Backfire" not.

Brahmos is cheaper to procure, is more modern and the NG version will offer better abilities.
Wrong, Brahmos is costly even compared to western systems.
NG version development hasn't started yet.

The purchase of over 200 air-launched BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles for the IAF was cleared by Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on 19 October 2012, at the cost of ₹60 billion (US$892 million)

How about a stand off missile launcher platform?
With MTCR signed, i'm sure slowly we'll get to know what is the full flight profile of Brahmos and how long it can actually reach.
With a Airborne missile launcher, it can be true AC killer in IOR.
