Btw concerning your previous post, how does having a long-range nuclear deterence against the US, help india from their blackmail?
During the WW1 and WW2, the US mainland, the US economic system and the civil population remained largely isolated from the violence and destruction of war. When the US invaded Iraq/Afghanistan the major logic behind the invasion was to bring the war to the enemies before the enemies could bring the war to the US mainland (like 9/11). Despite having all the tactical sophistication the belligerents did not possess the capability to hit the US back on US's turf and this gives the US a great advantage. The US could recover from any sort of loss very quickly. The US had got everything to gain and the defenders had got everything to loose.
Before the invention of modern weapons, the only Hyper-power in the history of the mankind, the British Empire enjoyed similar strategic advantages. The Great Britain which is an Island nation remained largely isolated from the rest of the Europe and other parts of the world. Any invading army had to cross the rough waters before reaching the Island, most of them failed (thanks to the strong British Navy). While the Britishers invaded other nations, other nations could not reach the British mainland. That is why Britain remained largely unaffected during the Colonial campaigns, and during the WW1. Britain could expand it's economy, produce more soldiers and weapons because it remained isolated from the wars it had been fighting on other peoples' lands. After the invention of Ballistic Missiles and Fighters situation changed for Britain when the Germans starting bombing the strategic targets deep inside the Island. Britain suffered a lot during the WW2 resulting in the collapse of the British Empire.
In current scenario, even if India manages to fend off against an invading US army, the war will leave us devastated economically and otherwise, while the US population will remain largely unaffected. Recent examples are Vietnam, Afghanistan. Even though Afghanistan is famously known as "graveyard of empires", Afghanistan has remained the graveyard of it's own people who were butchered by the invading armies, most recently by the US.
Like some people say "Sovereignty is never given, Sovereignty is asserted". After a few decades, India will be in the same place where China is today, in short an "eye-shore" for the western hegemonic powers. India would definitely not like to see many western military bases in and around the Indian Ocean in future. Instead of waiting for those few decades, we must start the preparation.
Having a delivery system which might deliver WMDs deep inside the US mainland will at least deter the US and the NATO forces from being aggressive and adventurous against India. For example, US might not like to vaporize Mumbai, because the Indian response might lead to vaporization of the NY city. That is how an economically weak Russia has been able to fend off against the NATO forces so far. Those big powers know very well what an all-out-war against Russia (or China) might mean.
This is not the whole story, this is just a small part of the whole story, but this one is a very important part. If India wishes to become a global power (economic and military), India will have to possess ICBMs.
