Does bollywood help in increasing india's popularity?

Bollywood has a good impact in Middle East and Africa. Not sure about SEA.

Very popular in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. @madokafc

Their dangdut music also has many bollywood/hindustani influences.

Becoming more popular in Thailand and other countries too.

I think even tv programs are shown there.Sometime ago when Star plus's version of Mahabharath was going on someone opened a thread about how it was quite popular there. We were having a nice discussion with other Indonesian members.....till some crazy Bangladeshis started talking about how it was anti islamic etc...thread got shut down, and even deleted

I think the chopra one was true to the source, this one goes in it's own direction in many places, over dramatizes things and even missed out many events which caused people to rage. I like the music, production was decent, effects were terrible (100 crores over 200+ episodes... total budget, so you need to keep that in mind).

But overall it was I thought it was okay and did pretty well. Tamil version had three reruns on vijay tv, and prompted other channels to make their own versions...at one point there were 3 MBs on tv But I think the definitive version is still the B.R Chopra one.

iam south Indian and I dont know hindi hindi is compulsory in education till tenth but I some how passed with out studying(indian education system no one should be failed till tenth )

Bollywood is misrepresenting India. The world should take a look at Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu films also to realize the far better quality of Indian films which has been scrutinized with Bollywood movies as a scale.

I feel sad when so called national media ignor local movies they shouldn't be call national media more like north indian English channel

Pakistan was even protesting the movie "Bajrangi Bhaijan" and the movie was censored like hell to suit pak politics.

it was good... by bollywood standard and was a big hit... the main criticism was it did not lampoon islam enough(or did with kids gloves) but hinduism was singled out..
the reason is possibly because the director is a hindu and hence felt comfortable dealing with the subject... besides there is a good tradition among hindus in india to be self-critical(till hindu fundamentalists gained power)... not much among muslims...
