Do not give holy Jewish artifacts to a country that expelled its Jews

Totally agree with that fellow. Sphinx should be returned especially if it was looted, no ifs, and, or buts about it.

I'm going to have to disappoint my friend Go-MiG for once and say no.
A piece in a Museum anywhere is a good thing for humanity. Any piece.

Let's stay in Iraq as per O.P. The marvels that couldn't be moved because
of their size were destroyed by the iconoclasts psychopaths of Daesh, as
were the Muslim monuments of Timbuktu. Librairies fared no better.

Strictly speaking, the Louvre in Paris is a safer depository for your ancient
wonders than almost anywhere else & especially their land of origin at times.

Billions have been spent for conservation of these because my country values
the cultural worth of all human creations and is rich enough to act correctly in
their defense. In some cases, we preserved the memory of by-gone people.

Of course, it is always looting but that's better than destruction as in Niniveh.
Sorry but museums have precedence over governments as far as I'm concerned.

BTW, had that sphynx been in Egypt that Iranians wouldn't have gotten to see it!

So most of this imaginary "Greater Israel" is composed of KSA? Good to know!

Ah, that's the map of their meanderings trying to escape civilization!
If they claim that, might as well include Russia, all of Europe, in fact
most of the Old World and so on everywhere the diaspora took them.

Hegemony is a conceptual step away if they include all ground ever
stepped on by any Jew ...

Oh, well!

Good day all, Tay.

Museums are a great thing. Cultural heritage and art by itself is even greater.

The problem is that art that belongs to country x or y and people x or y (in this case the ancient heritage of Arab countries) should be displayed in those countries and returned if the security allows for that. Especially if looted illegally originally.

What you mention, is a bit besides the point as those are very rare and sporadic freak incidents given that those historical heritage sites and monuments destroyed by the likes of Daesh, Al-Qaeda in Maghreb and Taliban, were left alone for 1400 years by hundreds of successive Muslim dynasties. Nor is there fear of such a thing happening in Egypt or KSA in 2018. For instance all ancient historical sites (there are 100's of ancient heritage sites in KSA the are at least over 2000 years old), with the exception of some fairly recently built shrines in Makkah and Madinah that were removed (graves remained intact), no heritage sites have been destroyed in the past 1400 years, other than some pagan idols 1400 years ago in and around Makkah. Despite that many pagan artifacts remain and many are found dating to Sumerian times in Eastern Arabia.

A quite famous statue of the pagan God Ishtar from the Sumerian (neighboring area and also compromising areas of modern-day Northern KSA) period was found on Tarout Island, Eastern Province, in KSA. A farmer found it. Dilmun, Magan and other civilizations in Eastern Arabia were very close to neighboring Sumer or even in some fields extensions of each other. Many historians and experts believe that Sumerians themselves came from neighboring Eastern Arabia.

Article in Arabic about the finding. Amazing what kind of heritage that you can find in our part of the world. We are talking about a statue that is almost 5000 years old.

Anyway, I think that it would be a good gesture, like is already happening increasingly, for European countries to return those stolen artifacts as has already been happening. Just like it happens among European countries themselves.

I think this "Greater Israel" is supposed to mimic the ancient Israelite/Jewish sphere of influence but it is a funny thing given that we know tons of native civilizations that predate the Israeli/Jewish one. Making such claims, would be quite problematic.

BTW imagine for a second if somebody looted French artifacts during WW2 (as happened under the Nazi occupation). Obviously the French state tried actively to return as much as possible back home. So you should understand the reactions of Arab countries here, especially those not at war and stable.
