well, in your first photo, the dark glasses look "over-doing it" given the clothes he wears... and tie, well, instead of ties i wear cravats.

maybe you can try the style of the chap in your profile-picture, but with hair trimmed lower to just around the ears... will look good.

It's an old style. Particularly a military style, probably barbers from the military started to work in New York City, etc. and it became urbanized.

i don't think it is particularly a western style or was specifically invented in usa... the germans had it, so did the soviet.
