MARCOS Special Forces - The BEST in the world
New Delhi:
Discovery Channel puts the audience through the toughest training of the Indian Army. The ‘Paratrooper Special Forces Operatives’ are amongst the sharpest and the deadliest soldiers who have earned an enviable niche in the Army. An average 10 per cent of the volunteers make it to this elite group, classifying it as one of the toughest military selection courses in the world.
On the occasion of India’s 70th Independence Day, Discovery Channel’s exclusive INDIA’S PARATROOPERS: EARNING THE BADGE will give viewers a rare peek into the Indian Army’s training academy to reveal the intense training programs these soldiers undergo to perform unconventional warfare roles. Preparing for the unpredictable world of covert operations, counterterrorism, frontline combat and law enforcement, only the fastest, strongest and smartest survive.

Watch the awe-inspiring story of courage and commitment in India’s Paratroopers: Earning the Badge on Monday, August 15 at 9 pm on the Discovery Channel. The program will simulcast on Discovery Tamil.

Known as Paratrooper Special Forces, these operatives wear the Maroon Beret and pin to their chest ‘The Balidaan Badge’ - the winged blade of sacrifice. To earn this distinguished honour, the volunteers complete a grueling 90 days’ probation wherein they are stretched to the limit of their endurance. Discovery Channel will give viewers a never-before-seen glimpse of a training module where only the bravest succeed to achieve the prestigious badge.
Bonded by their heroic commitment, the probationers transition through an extreme selection process and a rigorous training regime. Not tasks for the fainthearted, the recruits are put through a series of punishing physical and mental routines including wading through chilling waters, sleep deprivation, exhaustion, uphill and downhill speed march, and the ultimate non-stop 100 KM endurance run. Focusing heavily on physical fitness and psychological strength, the combat training encompasses specialization in weaponry, demolition, navigation, evasion, survival, communication, medical, language and unconventional warfare.
Learn what it takes to meet the exceptional standards of the most specialized forces in the world.

Discovery and Natgeo both becomes Indian chanel. They are showings more Indian topics then topics from other country.
On topic special troops should have special training it's nothing exclusive for India.

. . . .
Discovery India is the name of the channel. Offered in many indian languages. Discovery Hindi, Discovery Tamil are some examples. Same goes for Nat Geo .

Every main channel has their own versions according to the region. In this case they think that their contents should be suited well for indian market where the TRP as well as the ad revenue is higher. Be it fox group or Warner group.

On topic : Special forces always love to be in the dark . PR of our defence never gave a chance to relished up on them. This is an oppertunity to get a chance to view a good documentary on them . Nobody is claiming " mine is bigger than yours " here. We just might get lucky to get some exclusive footages which we defense lovers get a turn on than any wardrobe malfunction of Bollywood celebrities.

How long is the mandatory course if you know I really thought of never ending training but still there suppose to be a time where a soldier is good for missions or battles?.
Selection is 90 days and advanced training courses last around 2 years so it takes a PARA (SF) operator about 2.5 years to enter their operational unit.

They work in utmost secrecy, sometimes even dying in the line of work in some distant part of the world–yet, year after year young men from the Indian Army try desperately to enter the elite para special forces, which sees 90-95 percentage of attrition rate during the selection process itself. Come this Independence Day, Discovery Channel will reveal, in its hour-long show, Indian Paratroopers: Earning the Badge, the grueling selection process. “Some of these elite soldiers, in the front line of our battles, come from little known towns and villages in our country–we thought it was the right time to honour them,” begins Prabhu Asgaonkar, the producer of the show, who had to spend 15 months in production, with a good part spent on research as little is known outside the defence circles about these troopers.

Toughest day

In the show, which was filmed in an undisclosed location, 23 men–all in their early 20s are pushed to physical and mental extremes like non-stop 100 kilometre runs, uphill sprints, cold water swims, while also being put through days of sleep deprivation–all during the selection phase. The men are also put through exercises, which require them to demolish structures, evade capture, survive in the wild, give emergency medical aid and converse in a range of languages. “The whole exercise is a roller coaster ride from hell and back, where men break down, but the strongest have succeeded to earn the precious maroon beret and The Balidaan Badge (the winged blade of sacrifice),” says Asgaonkar.

Enemy lines

Thanks to Hollywood, Indian viewers know more about Navy Seals and British SAS over their very own maroon beret paratroopers. Not any lower than their American and British counterparts, these ghost operatives regularly work behind national borders to foil terrorist attacks and safeguard national interests with the latest being a counter insurgency

operation in Myanmar. “Indian para ranks amongst the very best special forces operatives in the world as they serve in the most difficult terrains including the Siachen Glacier–the highest battlefield on earth,” says, Asgaonkar adding that this coming out of the special forces will hopefully enable us to add these men to popular culture. I really hope the show in full is uploaded (in good quality) online for those of us outside of India.

The trailer was itself a treat:

But I would really like for the show to go into more depth with respect to the training/deployment aspect of these operators; as pointed out in the article, there is next to no knowledge of such things in the public domain.

@PARIKRAMA off topic but PM has said discussion on J&K to include only Pakistani occuiped territory. TOINS is carrying it as headline
The only logical stance.

@Abingdonboy I hope they exhibit the BOC and it's fun.

Who all are up for a round of BOC?????? LOL
As the article states, not all aspects of the training/selection were filmed, only sections so let's wait and see what is shown ;)

If you ask about the Para SF then its 90 days probation period for an experienced Infantryman and 1 year after that for specialized training.

For Marcos its 3 years.
