Diplomatic ties with Kosovo begin today

So, I believe there is little chance BD can establish a diplomatic relationship with Taiwan when its minister loses job for trying to open a trade office, which is essentially a defacto embassy. Kosovo was almost same, because a relationship would have made Russia displeased. Now, that Russia has supported MM when it expelled million refugees to BD, the time was ripe to defy Russia and establish a very good diplomatic relationship with Kosovo.

Albania thanks Bangladesh for recognising Kosovo

Albania has thanked Bangladesh for recognising its neighbour Kosovo during a bilateral meeting in Tirana.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam met his Albanian counterpart Etjen Xhafaj for talks on Saturday.

The official meeting was the first in quite a long time between the countries, the foreign ministry said.

Alam will lead the first-ever Bangladesh delegation to Kosovo after Dhaka officially recognised the country last year February.

Formal diplomatic relations were established through a signing of an agreement on Feb 16 this year in New York by the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh and the representative of Kosovo.

State minister Alam is also leading the delegation to Albania.

He briefed his Albanian counterpart of the recent social, political and infrastructure developments in Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In response, the Albanian minister stated that “the development of Bangladesh had been an issue to observe for all other similar countries and Albania could learn a great deal from the process Bangladesh adopted to turn it into a manufacturing export-oriented economy.”

“He profusely thanked the leadership of Bangladesh for recognising Kosovo which would help stabilise the situation in Balkan and brought peace for the people of the region,” the foreign ministry said.

The Albanian side also thanked Bangladesh for providing shelter to the Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar.

Both sides agreed to conclude few bilateral instruments to further strengthen their current relations.

They agreed to work together in various international fora for the mutual benefit of the both the countries.

Alam also met Foreign Minister of Kosovo Behgjet Pacolli, who expressed the sincere gratitude of his government to the government of Bangladesh for recognising Kosovo and providing support in different international fora.

Both of them agreed to work closely in future and emphasised the need to exchange more visits and conclusion of official instruments to strengthen the bilateral relations.

“Cooperation between the private sectors could be the beginning to start with and this could be further replicated in other bilateral sectors,” the foreign ministry said.

The State Minister of Bangladesh assured all supports in future for Kosovo.

Alam will also meet the President of Kosovo and the Speaker of the State Assembly of Kosovo during his visit.

. . . . . . .
On topic, I wonder if Kosovo will be amenable about us setting up assembly plants as a springboard for exporting items to Europe? I am sure the Govt. is possibly looking into it and will propose it after exploratory steps.

Kosovo is in line to become one of the next seven EU member states.

That'll be pretty dope.

The biggest hurdle for Kosovo is China, India and Russia.

These Balkan states identify with Turkey so they will get preference in any business matters.

Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina has the best chance of joining EU. Kosovo's entry into EU is opposed by Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Slovakia and Spain.

Appreciate the tidbits....we have very good relations with Albania as well.

What could be the possible reason for these countries going against Kosovo??

Puzzling.....

Everyone has their own reasons but I know a lot of countries are against Kosovo's independence which is why Germany is pushing Serbia for a deal because that would solve a lot of EU headaches.

China is against Kosovo because of Taiwan. India because of Assam, Kashmir, etc. Russia is more complicated. NATO bombed Serbia in 1999 and then Kosovo unilaterally declared independence in 2008 which G.W. Bush quickly accepted. This violates the principals of state sovereignty and non-interference. Russia followed that by going into South Ossetia which is a region disputed by Georgia. Russia used Kosovo as a template for Crimea. This is why Kosovo's entry into UN is a huge issue for the Security Council.

Cyprus won't accept Kosovo into EU because of the Turkish Cypriot issue. Spain faces secessionist movements in Catalonia and Basque. Serbia, Greece and Romania follow Orthodox Christianity. They all have been allies historically along with Slovakia against the Ottoman empire. None of them have any love for the Balkan Muslims. Greece is worried about its own Albanians minority getting ideas. While Romania and Slovakia have Hungarian minorities who are watching Kosovo issue closely.

Well, apple maps doesn't even show Kosovo as a country and google maps barely does by dotted lines instead of straight lines like for other countries.

Maps aside the larger issue is state sovereignty and non-interference. Palestinians can use the Kosovo template to self-declare independence and put USA plus EU into a bind since both accepted Kosovo's declaration for independence.

Using the same template, Russian separatist of Transnistria can declare independence from Moldova, Kurdish separatists in Syria, Turkey and Iraq can declare independence, Saudi Arabia's Shia can declare independence, Iran's Sunni in Sistan and Baluchestan can declare independence, Assam and Kashmir can declare independence etc. The world will quickly turn into a mad place without the principal of state sovereignty and non-interference.
