Diplomat arrest: US has no plans to drop charges against Khobragade Washington

Washington: Even as it described the relationship with India as "incredibly important" the US has made clear that it has no plans to drop charges against Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade to deescalate the situation.

"No body is walking away from the charges," State Department spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters Thursday.

It was also "not true", she said that the department was putting pressure on New York's US Attorney Preet Bharara to drop the case against Khobragade, whose arrest and strip search have sparked the worst India-US stand off in years.

Following up on Secretary of State John Kerry's expression of "regret" to India's Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman made another call Thursday to Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh.

The expression of "regret" was over the way the whole matter was handled. But the charges against Khobragade were a different matter, Harf said adding "We take law enforcement seriuously".

Sherman and Singh discussed specific steps to resolve the situation, she said: "Our focus now is how to take this incredibly important relationship forward" and that this incident does not impact the relationship adversely.

Harf declined to say whether Sherman had also distanced the State Department from the statement issued by Bharara on the diplomat's case to which India has taken umbrage.

She also declined comment on the Bharara statement casting "implicit" aspersions on the Indian legal system, Indian law enforcement authorities.

US and Bharara will eat a humble pie in this case.

There is a fraud involved in speedily getting the maid's family to US, where others wait for eight years for permanent residency. Mr. Bharara perpetuated this conspiracy. Hence as more facts come to light, Mr Bharara and those junior men in the State Department who gave the go ahead are in serious trouble.

As conspiracy unfolds, US would either be forced to investigate conspiracy or drop the case. Either way Bharara is finished.

Who knows he may join some of the Indian origin people he prosecuted in jail. I believe conspiracy charge is about ten times serious than under paying the maid. By the way the maid was on Indian soil in the Consulate. She got paid three times more than maids in India get paid.

in my opinion, the US did the worst thing, the maid incident at most is a personal dispute, it's serious but more on a personal side of things. Did the Americans not know their diplomat was gay and didn't know Indian law?

What do you mean fictitious charge that indicted India deputy consulate for violating US law, the US justice department won't charge someone without a probable and justifiable cause in any criminal case that forward to the US criminal court.

also she signed the affidavit herself before coming,did we force her??

US labor law don't take into the account of free housing and free food are count as part of the minimum wage require by the law itself.

Anyone in the US legally required to be protect by US law. Don't matter a maid is Indian national and hired by Indian government or consulate, if either the Indian government or consulate violate the US labor law then they will be to answer to US justice system and defend their innocent.
