Did India overestimate its ‘position’ in Afghanistan?

.
Any way..economics, diplomaric influence and foreign relation with critical countries reflect where do we stand wrt to Pakistan...I can understand ..The best thing India acheived with Afganistan is the support of a good number educated or people from Afganistan for India...Without getting directly involved in any conflict, this is a big acheivement for us when we do not have access to that country.

India has been invited to join the next meeting as US, Russia and China have agreed to expand the meet to include all regional stakeholders.
So India will join KSA, Germany & Tajikistan in the next meeting by group on Afghanistan to be held in September 1st week.

In Past 6 months, US Special envoy for Afghanistan, Khalilzad has visited India twice; Russian Special envoy for Afghanistan has visited India twice and Chinese special envoy to Afghanistan also visited India.

This shows how India has successfully made itself a major player in Afghanistan despite sharing Zero border.
A real life example of India's growing might.

India has also got invited to all major international conferences on Afghanistan.
Now we have also got invited to be part of the New 8-nation grouping to be formed as US-Russia-China trilateral on Afghanistan gets expanded.

US envoy Khalilzad has informed India that Indian Govt will be one of the twelve international guarantors of Afghan peace deal

India, which was not part of the recent talks in which the US, Russia, China and Pakistan shared the table on the Afghan peace process, will be briefed by the German special envoy on Afghanistan and Pakistan, Markus Potzel, on Friday (July 19).

Potzel, who will meet Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale and senior Indian officials, will brief them on the talks in Doha. “We wish to see India play a role in the regional format,” he said in Delhi on Thursday, ahead of his official meetings tomorrow.

Primarily geography. Look up Cuban missile crisis and the idea of 'this is my backyard so lay off or I will nuke you".

Actually, the idea was more like "Do not put nuclear missiles in my backyard that you can launch from the other side of the world" and that does not really apply to nations that are neighbors already.

USSR and USA were neighbours. And Afghanistan is Pakistan's 'backyard' not India's.

And just how well has Pakistan been able to keep other players out of its perceived backyard? What about the people of the backyard itself? Do they get a say?

Given it's resources not as well as USA. Musharaf particulary sold the 'backyard' for peanuts. The cost of that is beibng reaped and has been for 18 years now by Pakistan.

No more, no less then Cubans, Grenadians, Panamaniians and other Central American states that either US military or CIA has screwed over. I am sure you know the long and rich US history with it's southern backyard.

And you forget that USA and USSR [today] Russia are neighbours at the narrow Bering Straits with the Russkies having sold that piece of frozen turf to Yanks.

Well, the Pakistani leadership made its choices and must deal with the consequences of those choices too.

Fair comment. And just like Pakistan, other nations will pursue their national interests too, no more and no less, backyard or no backyard.

The better players win. As always. Till the next round. And so on.

As in life of individuals you face consequences of your decisions. So do states. What Pakistan did in 1980s it reaped in 2000s to even today. What USA did in 1980s it reaped in 9/11 and events post that. I believe CIA call it "blowback".

The better players win. As always. Till the next round. And so on.
Agreed. Entirely. No time for crying. Get up, learn and move to next round.

Please do note that the "launch from the other side of the world" is there for that reason. :D

Absolutely. All players will do the same. Those quicker to adapt to the coming tomorrow will be better placed than the slackers.
