I dont know the truth...but Merkel is an arrogant German for sure! ...In fact, Germans are the most difficult people to deal with in Europe...they seem to have kind of superiority complex, thankfully, WW2 defeat keeps them grounded but recent downfall of EU economy and growing weightage of Germany in EU due to its strong performance, keeping them high on confidence and arrogance!
