Was a bid to slow poison 62-year-old cricketer-politician Imran Khan to grab his political legacy the last straw that led him to divorce his journalist wife, Reham Khan? This is one of the theories making the rounds since the two announced their split on October 30.
The two are yet to divulge reasons for parting ways, fuelling a barrage of speculative reports about the divorce. Journalist Arif Nizami's revelation about the attempted poisoning citing intelligence sources has been among the most dramatic.
"Intelligence agencies conveyed to Imran through his close friends that Reham's intentions were not right. It was feared she could poison Imran to grab his party's reigns,'' Nizami told Pakistan's News 24 channel.
His theory carries weight as he is known sniffing out scoops and breaking news. Nizami had broken the story about Imran and Reham's marriage in December 2014 as well as the divorce last month. In September , he said the couple had reached a point of no return and were about to part ways.
The journalist said Reham had made Imran's life hell and the decision to annul the marriage was not mutual.
According to Nizami, the couple had frequent fights. Nizami told the channel the two fought bitterly two days before the divorce was announced after Reham told Imran she would tell him how to run his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
He said Reham was then sent to London on the pretext of attending a conference when Imran emailed her the divorce notice much to her shock.
Another journalist Shahid Masood, who claims to be very close to Imran and had tried to dissuade him from marrying Reham at the behest of the ex- cricketer's sister, echoed Nizami.
He revealed that traces of rodent poison were found in Imran's body when he fell ill and was admitted to a hospital after eating a laddoo.
Masood said a "non-political personality" and an ex-officer of "an institution'' involved in surveillance had asked Imran not to marry Reham. "He contacted Reham as well and told her Imran is a popular leader whom she should stay away from,'' he said.
Imran, however, ignored the advice. The relationship soon began to sour when an ambitious Reham insisted on participating in politics.
The revelation that Reham had lied about her degree and domestic violence in her earlier marriage did not help. "Her relation with Imran was based on lies and fraud. She kept Imran in the dark about her past life and falsely claimed her ex-husband use to beat her,'' said Nizami.
Nizami claimed Reham used to beat her ex-husband and had even hit Imran as well. "Imran was so sick of her that he even ignored advice that he should wait for local bodies' election to get over to announce his divorce with Reham.''
Reham has also been accused of taking money from PTI leaders to finance a film she was making. Aleem Khan, who lost a crucial by election earlier this month from Lahore, was one of the financiers.
