Diamer-Bhasha Dam: Nawaz to personally monitor project, visit site soon

kalabagh dam can be built in phases if ts disguised as an uplift barrage, the problem exists in its name.
secondly all of existed projects are based on study conducted by zia regime in 80s. thats as a very superficially study.
i am pretty sure that with a detail study of our rivers we can come up with many more projects
Water expert proposes barrage-dam near Attock -- Dawn report

There is potential of 100,000MW hydropower, only 6-7% of its has been tapped. Bunji dam alone will generare more hydropower then all of dams build so far since 47. It all depends on Ganjas now.

ISLAMABAD: With energy crisis expected to exacerbate in the summer months, prime minister Nawaz Sharif said on Thursday that he will personally monitor progress of the 4,500 megawatt Diamer-Bhasah dam in Gilgit-Baltistan, directing that security for foreign consultants be ensured.

During a briefing on the project at the PM house on Thursday, Nawaz noted that the project will not only help augment energy requirements of the country but will also prove to be a source of development for Gilgit-Baltistan. He added that he will be monitoring progress of the project personally and will visit the site soon.

To this effect, Nawaz directed that 1 percent of the project’s $13.87 billion cost would be allocated specifically for environmental conservation so that local vegetation and wildlife resources are not affected and first preference for un-skilled jobs should be given to locals of the project area.

Noting the security situation in the region, the prime minister further directed that foreign consultants working on the project should be given all possible security, costs for which should be adjusted in the project cost.

Nawaz was briefed that a separate unit of Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts was being raised specifically to provide security to the project and personnel involved and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) had already been signed with interior ministry.

142 km alternate route to be built on KKH

The project’s construction is expected to affect 100 kilometers of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) will be affected.

To mitigate the effects of this closure, the permier was told that an alternate route stretching for 142km will be built on KKH.

Nawaz directed that Wapda chairman should visit the project site immediately and report the updated status regarding progress of work.

The project is expected to provide a gross storage of 8.1 million acre feet (MAF) and live storage of 6.4 MAF and the total cost of the project is $13.87 billion with a completion time of nine years. The project will have an installed capacity of 4,500MW, generated by 12 units of 375MW each. They are expected to generate revenue of $2.216 billion per annum, paying back its cost in eight years and extend the life of Tarbela reservoir by 35 years.

Nawaz was told that land acquisition for the project is in process. To accommodate the displaced people, three model villages, one each at Thak Das, Harpan Das and Kino Das with all basic amenities shall be developed. These model villages will resettle 4,228 affected households.

New Dams that are of Hydro-ELECTRIC ones in Sindh and Balochistan. I have seen that Balochistan Dams are not producing electricity at all which is bad. We need to bring in experts to convert it in to electric ones.

you cant the dams are suppose to be for irrigation not power. there arent any big rivers in baluchistan nor any slop in sindh to porduce power. even in punjab only kalabagh is the location for dams after that the river enters int plans and only small run of river projects on barradges can produce some power

Then build power turbines that can produce electricity through Run of River.

Then build power turbines that can produce electricity through Run of River.
such turbines known as bulb turbines are available and are being installed on rivers and canals but there yield is obviously low, that is he matter of physics without gravity dont expect much generation. at some places the river so wide that nothing can be installed
e.g at jinnah , tunsa around 100mw each will be installed

Our Canal network can produce a lot of cheap energy. Just the canal network of Punjab is said to be able to produce about 2000 MW.

Whoever manages such project(s) would be Pakistan's hero in my view.

All the dams in North Pakistan have an element of risk because of seismological reasons.

not risky, seismic activity of 9-10 can easily be handed by dams. earth filled dams can virtual hold even larger earthquakes.

canals total capacity of 300 identified sites is near 300mw, with another 600 mw in 12 major canals and barrages as conducted by detail WAPDA study that too only during the peak

Thanks for your informative reply. I would like to point out that our canal network operates 11 months of the year. The operating cost would essentially be salaries and sundry maintenance. A textile mill using 1 MW of electricity could easily employ 300 people. Such units can be coupled to small low-head hydropower projects for providing employment close to people's homes.

All this needs is some vision.

This is a good news but the work needs to start immediately as Bhasha dam is very important for Pakistan but so far no work has started.

the projects that can be implemented as intial feasiblity and detail peasibility study which take 3-4 years have either been completed or in final phase. some projects have even gone detailed design and engneering study and can be started tomorrow if govt wants it.(e,g dasu and bhasha and bunji)

the projects will cost 30-40 billion dollars. govt will need atleast to finance 25% of it. rest can be financed from banks and supplier credit. if the gov want to build it all in public sector rather private sector. with total new addition of 30,000+ mw.

WAPDA - Water Resources and Hydropower Development-Vision 2025
no.2 ,no.4,no.5 in list have been taken up by private sector.

the list doesnt contian tarbela IV,V extention and other private projects like suki kinari
if implemented pakistan willl be able to produce half of all its demand in 2025 by hydro power.

there also main off river storage sites in punjab that are easily acessible and thus can be built rapidly. a very good alternative to kalabagh when it comes to storage and flood prevention as well as some power genration.
although all of educated class know that kalabagh is important but we all know that building it is impossible in current political situation, therefore to prevent super floods govt must go for these off channel storage dams, they are quicker to build due to their location and good stop gap measure for before bhasha dam can be completed. besides pakistan will always need new dams for storge. e.g the akhori, dok pathan, bahtar dam and sanjwal dam can provide storage of three times of bhasha dam and can be built within four years. we already have feasibility of akhori at hand.
remeber we lost our 10 billion dollars atleast due to 2010 flood

fig. dams that can be built quicker and cheaply for storage
