ISLAMABAD: With energy crisis expected to exacerbate in the summer months, prime minister Nawaz Sharif said on Thursday that he will personally monitor progress of the 4,500 megawatt Diamer-Bhasah dam in Gilgit-Baltistan, directing that security for foreign consultants be ensured.

During a briefing on the project at the PM house on Thursday, Nawaz noted that the project will not only help augment energy requirements of the country but will also prove to be a source of development for Gilgit-Baltistan. He added that he will be monitoring progress of the project personally and will visit the site soon.

To this effect, Nawaz directed that 1 percent of the project’s $13.87 billion cost would be allocated specifically for environmental conservation so that local vegetation and wildlife resources are not affected and first preference for un-skilled jobs should be given to locals of the project area.

Noting the security situation in the region, the prime minister further directed that foreign consultants working on the project should be given all possible security, costs for which should be adjusted in the project cost.

Nawaz was briefed that a separate unit of Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts was being raised specifically to provide security to the project and personnel involved and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) had already been signed with interior ministry.

142 km alternate route to be built on KKH

The project’s construction is expected to affect 100 kilometers of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) will be affected.

To mitigate the effects of this closure, the permier was told that an alternate route stretching for 142km will be built on KKH.

Nawaz directed that Wapda chairman should visit the project site immediately and report the updated status regarding progress of work.

The project is expected to provide a gross storage of 8.1 million acre feet (MAF) and live storage of 6.4 MAF and the total cost of the project is $13.87 billion with a completion time of nine years. The project will have an installed capacity of 4,500MW, generated by 12 units of 375MW each. They are expected to generate revenue of $2.216 billion per annum, paying back its cost in eight years and extend the life of Tarbela reservoir by 35 years.

Nawaz was told that land acquisition for the project is in process. To accommodate the displaced people, three model villages, one each at Thak Das, Harpan Das and Kino Das with all basic amenities shall be developed. These model villages will resettle 4,228 affected households.

If Ganjas can build Bunji, Basha and Dasu dams then they will leave huge legacy behind. People still remember army general build dams, since Tarbela dam not a single big has been build. While all 3 of them are bigger then Tarbela dam.

technically speaking bunji and dasu are cheaper to make, there combine cost is equal to bhasha dam as they are run off river.
only bhasha dam is a real dam. though still smalller than tarbela dam. in both power and storage(power to be enhanced to 6000mw from 4800 in stage V of tarbela)

Interesting, so only other possible big dams with storage capacity are Kalabgh 3600mw and Skardu 15,000MW. Skardu will have capacity of almost 3 times more then Tarbella dam, but its long term project. Both unluckly to be build any time soon.

i think u mean katzara dam.thats 19 maf capacity dam.estimated capacity of electric feneration is 15000+ MW. but strategicaly very vulnurable. cos indian ocupation of siachin.

kalabagh dam can be built in phases if ts disguised as an uplift barrage, the problem exists in its name.
secondly all of existed projects are based on study conducted by zia regime in 80s. thats as a very superficially study.
i am pretty sure that with a detail study of our rivers we can come up with many more projects

Yes, but i read that capacity is 35MAF. Which is huge and 4-5 times bigger then biggest Pakistan dam tarbella.

This is really good for Pakistan. This government, unlike any previous governments has surprised a LOT of people in the US, Europe, China and in the Middle East. They should be given credit for their good efforts and planning. I was at an investor's conference a few days ago and Pakistan's market kept coming up. It's the first time since the country's inception that some government (finally) decided to build infrastructure considering future needs. There are over 150 Billion dollars worth of projects planned in five-ten years (both already under work and some currently being planned). That's really great for the people of Pakistan. Good job and keep it up!

Not gonna happen. Even if they start construction now, it will take 8-10 years to complete and presumably a new government would take the credit.

Even if dams are 50% done by the time goverment is replaced then it will be legacy of Ganjas.

Well Nawaz Sharif , has some momentum going and if he pulls this project off before next election it would certainly change the history of future elections in Pakistan for sure

So far indications look good based on work being done by Nawaz , but real fuits of the effort will be clear later on

people are idiots but not that much.
the time frame for dasu and bunji is 7 years so if govt start it they can take credit for it. as it will be mostly completed by 2018 when they are leaving, if they start it now

PML N claims undisputed credit for GHAZI BROTHA when only 30% was built by there govt.
they even claim credit for gawadar and pesh-islam motorway which they didnt even started may be just planned on paper.
