We are a republic...we do not act like a federation....our cities do not have local governments....the entire country is one entity with a unified economy...individual cities or towns are not considered as separate economic entities.....demarcation of individual cities is only for city corporation maintenance purposes...that's it!

Sorry but couldnot resist posting this one. Heard of Gurgaon which was a village few years back on the outskirts of Delhi like NewTown is to Kolkata???. Well heres a for development in India.

Dude, repeating the same thing again and again won't prove anything. I've already explained the flaws in your comparison.

The figure for Kolkata you posted is of 2013 with the base year of 2004/05 while the figure of Dhaka is of 2008 with the base year of 1994/95 and that too an estimation of london based organization, can't rely on this figure.

If you really want a fair comparison come up with the latest figures of Dhaka published by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics. The figure you quoted for Kolkata is the latest one published by your government, CIA factbook only carries info about countries, not cities or states.

Dude, India is federal state where the regional states have separate economy systems. Hence it's important for your national statistics department to have separate data for every state or cities. But that's not the case for Bangladesh, we are a unitary state under the same economic system, so our statisics bureau publishes the national data only.

I ve been to both dhaka and Kolkata. Sorry to say but Dhaka doesnt measure up yet. but the current govt is doing some things to make the city more liveable and modern. i am sure given some time it will be better than Kol, because Kolkata leadership is useless and Kol will not improve for a long time.
but as things stand I give it to Kolkata

Countries with multiple cities with thriving economies produce stats for individual cities(Pakistan too for Lahore,Isloo,Karachi etc). But Bangladesh has only 1 major city with 90% development in the country happening with Dhaka & surrounding. That with Dhaka being the capital and the financial capital . It is rather surprising that Kolkata trumps Dhaka tbh.

Yes it does....India might be a quasi federation but we know(probably better than you) how much power your local governments have when dealing with Delhi(who failed to negotiate with WB gov on multiple occasions)...each of your states definitely act like separate entities...if it didn't a Communist gov in WB wouldn'r effect you very much since a non-communist gov was in the center...but we saw that was not the case.Our country does act like one unit.H.M.Ershad tried to make it more like a federation but nobody supported it.Our stats keepers do not concentrate on regional statistics...it never did...probably never will....we do not have any form of provincial structure or government.Our stats are always National figures not regional figures.It probably has something to do with being a province of Pakistan in the past.Provinces are usually the smallest significant government structure.All past stats show stats of EP not Dhaka or Chittagong.We just converted the provincial government to a national government and kept it that way!

That's a harsh truth that the development has been mostly in Dhaka but Chittagong is catching up and I won't be surprised if it eventually surpasses Dhaka. Chittagong has recently got a circular suburban railway with Chinese DEMU trains. A marine drive is under construction which will develop it's sea front. Some other infrastructure works are also underway. Chittagong is also experiencing a major construction boom with numerous highrises under construction.

And yeah, it's quite clear which city is ahead. You have admitted yourself that Kolkata residents are moving out of the city, that says it all how Kolkata is declining, while Dhaka is ever rising.

Stats. are gathered separately and then they are compiled. Not publishing separate data shows inefficiency. And, not being a federation can not be an alibi for nonperformance and inefficiency.

Dhaka would eventually overtake Kolkata as Bangladesh develops farther economically,and that is only natural with Dhaka being the country capital and priority number one. All showcase projects would ultimately end up in Dhaka.
That being said Kolkata at present is ahead of Dhaka, and outskirts of Kolkata are developing more rapidly than Kolkata. And Kolkata has all the basics in place- mass transport,important industries, planned suburbs, IT parks, world-renowned educational institutions. Dhaka should have to sort this type of things out before it can surpass Kolkata. And mind you Kolkata is growing as well and investments are pouring in albeit at a slower pace but still pouring in, because we have the base ready.

Kolkatans are moving to Mumbai and Delhi just like people from Mumbai and Delhi are trying to move to London and New York. People move towards greater economy.
