Dhaka remains 7th least liveable city globally 2023

Then tell me how you are discovering fudging that even independent Govt. economic critic in Bangladesh like CPD or PRI could not locate? They are not disputing the GDP number rather talking about low tax GDP ratio. They are not urging govt. to come out with ''real'' GDP so tax GDP ratio looks better.

The ground reality is India's consumption level is half of Bangladesh but they claim to have a higher per capita income. Talk about delusions of grandeur!

Talk is cheap....there is a reason why IMF and world bank are all saying Bangladesh economic numbers per capita will continue to be ahead of India in the years to come.
Despite Bangladesh's per capita infrastructure spending is half of India, it's urban road infrastructure is not that bad compared to Indian cities. I see plenty of Roads in Dhaka and Chattogram 4,6,8 lane with good condition. We are behind when it comes to commuter train service and Metro Rail. But Bangladesh will catch-up within 10-15 years in these sector.

Dhaka and other cities in Bangladesh have better skyline than comparable cities in India, thanks to our robust private sector investing in housing and construction complimenting govt. shortcoming. I don't know why these bhakt poojaris think we are in gutter while they are living in castle.

Look at this so called 'Billionaire's paradise' in Bengaluru. Does this look anyway better than any residential town in Dhaka or Chattogram? Yet they act like they are first world, totally in a different league!

I have friends - some of whom recently bought 3000~4000 SQFT. luxury condos in Gulshan and Bashundhara for around 15~16 crores. Average smaller condos in those neighborhoods (and even 2000 SQFT. new condos in Banani and Dhanmondi) go for around 7~8 crores, forget about luxury gated properties which are astronomically priced.

Waste of time talking to these idiots. No frame of common reference.

Basundhara is still under construction in parts, no one will be able to recognize it in another decade, once completed. And there are far higher grade areas like Purbachal and Jolshiri being developed as well...

We don't compare our neighborhoods with Indian ones. Thailand and Malaysia are examples for us, not India as claimed by bhakts.

The only way for Bangladesh to achieve a similar or even superior level of infrastructure compared to India is by aligning itself with China. However, there is a risk of ending up like Sri Lanka if this approach is not effective. Nonetheless, Sri Lanka is significantly ahead of Bangladesh in all aspects, making it preferable to end up in a situation similar to Sri Lanka.

Airport Road Dhaka - new greenery and landscaping added in the middle of a construction zone which is laudable. If they can spread this all around Dhaka, that'd make it like Garden City of Singapore to some degree. But disciplining South Asians is a huge challenge. Middle class suburban areas around the airport shown.

There are an insane quantity of Sri Lankans working in Bangladesh and remitting money back home.

I'd say probably somewhere around ten lakh or more of them working in Bangladesh at this time and as administrative and clerical people because of their high education standards and English competency.

How will Bangladeshi per capita electricity consumption be so high when we don't have heavy electricity guzzlers like electric trains and massive scale electricity consuming steel cement and chemical industries like India? Besides, everyone in Bangladesh uses LED bulbs nowadays and far more efficient electrical appliances than before - unlike some areas in India.

Consumption of electricity cannot be a valid indicator of standard of living.

Dhaka's temporary residents are now out of Dhaka on Eid vacation. The city is breathing a sigh of relief. But from tomorrow this Dhaka will be busy again. Dhaka's permanent residents had a brief respite from all the traffic snarls/jams for a few days.


Dhaka Elevated Expressway will connect Dhaka's Shahjalal airport in the North with Mohakhali, Tejgaon, and Kamalapur of Dhaka South Region. It is a rather massive undertaking, and only partially completed. The final phase of the Airport to Tejgaon section in Middle Dhaka is now underway. The Dhaka Elevated Expressway project was undertaken to improve the connectivity and traffic capacity of the north-south parts of Dhaka city and to establish advanced level services on the Asian Highway Corridor to improve regional connectivity and achieve communication efficiency, reduce communication costs and vehicle operating costs.

Metro Operations (MRT-6, 21 KM total and 17 elevated stations) have expanded hours now, Fajr to Isha prayer periods.
The MRT-6 line consists of three phases, of which only the first is currently operational.
  • Opened on 29 December 2022, from Uttara North to Agargaon. 11.73 kilometers (7.29 mi)
  • Slated for completion by October 2023, from Agargaon to Motijheel. 8.37 kilometers (5.20 mi)
  • Slated for completion in December 2025, from Motijheel to Kamalapur. 1.16 kilometers (0.72 mi)

Altogether there will be 5 lines, with MRT Lines 1, 2 and 4 (having 11, 24 and 16 KM lengths respectively) added later, by 2030.

Despite Dhaka's population pressure, it could be a lot more livable and pleasant if our policymaker do some not so costly yet very impactful intervention in Dhaka.

1.First and foremost, Fix our sidewalk or footpath. A lot of people are compelled to take rickshaws and buses because our cities are not walking friendly. We have inadiquate sidewalk, whatever exists, mostly occupied by street vendors and hawkers. So people have no option but to depends on road vehicles increasing traffic jam and chaos.

2. progressively reduce the number of Pedal Rickshaws and replace them with electric rickshaws similar we see in Bangkok.

3. Bus route rationalization is happening at snail paces. We need to vigorously push this project to cover the entire Dhaka as soon as possible. Replace all those out of fitness buses with electric buses.

4. Transfer all those inter-district bus stations at the periphery of Dhaka from current location of middle in the city. Govt. is talking about this for a long time but they are foot dragging to do it.

5. Make some roads pedestrian only especially in Old Dhaka.

If we make these low cost yet very impactful change of the city, Dhaka would be a lot pleasant to live. But our policy makers do not go for these solutions, they are only after mega projects where they can do mega corruption and mega looting.
