What's new

Dhaka metro construction finally begins tomorrow

Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Company Limited Orders for Supplying Rolling Stock and Maintenance Depot Equipment for the First MRT System in Bangladesh, Dhaka MRT Line-6
I am very happy to read the news. MRT coaches will be superior in quality. Japanese big companies do not fail the quality to earn an extra buck. However, considering the mindset of BD people, I wonder if there will be proper maintenance of the coaches.

I'd have more reason to be happy to get ToT for local assembly. That way - proper maintenance would be automatically assured.

Eventually they will end up needing close to 400 coaches for Dhaka use, not to speak of needing some 200 for Chittagong too at some point.

We will definitely need maintenance depots which should have minimal assembly facilities with frame rotors and gantry cranes.

These are the first thoughts that should come to mind for these idiot ministers. They can even get more bribes for ordering assembly plants......:disagree:

The project is being managed by the Communications Ministry's Dhaka Transport Co-ordination Authority, and a consortium of foreign as well as Bangladeshi firms known as NKDM Association is acting as General Consultant (GC). NKDM Association consists of: Nippon Koei Japan, Nippon Koei India, Delhi Metro Rail Corp (India), Mott MacDonald UK, Mott MacDonald India and Development Design Consultants (local consultant-Bangladesh)

I guess he meant the proper maintenance by the average passengers and users. Its more to do with the attitude of our people and how aware will they be towards the system's preservation.

Congrats Bangladesh, In Vietnam the cost of one km metro is more than 100 million US. And At that time, It is not being used

Why is that so? Are the other modes of transportation cheaper?

Dont troll the poor guys.. they will be trolled by their own metro the next 5-6 years as the traffic kills them

Mr. Anish, I will resist the urge to post sorry pictures of even worse overcrowded Indian Railway trains with roof riders ....don't have the time or patience now....

Don't Know Why I'm not an engineer so the Vietnamese news said the metro is the best way to resolve the traffic of Vietnam now. The cost as they said It is not cheap or too expensive when they compared to some neighbors

I am sure it is an effective way to resolve the traffic issue. My guess is that Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh traffic arent as bad as in Dhaka so it should not really be an issue. Creating gradual awareness could be a way to boost usage of metros.

I am also accustomed to the fact that Vietnamese people use a lot of motorcycles, no? The traffic then should be comparatively leaner.

No, Hanoi and Hochiminh traffic are bad same as your city. we had more than 50 million motorcycles and Vietnamese government will ban any motorcycles user in Hanoi from 2030. They are trying to find other measures and the metro is an important role

I see. Is pollution the main reason to ban motorcycles? And what about inland waterways.. just like they have done in Seoul? We started off with the later lately and its been getting very popular among the Dhaka residents.

Pollution is only one factor and it is not really an important like you see the traffic jam is the major factor. In Vietnam city, the river is small and is not suitable to replace. I see the Vietnamese progress is moving ahead Bangladesh 4 or 5 years

As I thought, more motorcycles! Our traffic jam is similar and worse in some cases. So we are on the same boat!

I do admire the progress of the Vietnamese people as a society and definitely as a country. Well done and hope we can learn from your positives.

I myself have one motorcycle, not enough money to buy a car :laughcry: In Vietnam, the cost of a car is expensive than 3 or 4 times ( the tax is 300%, because the government want to limit the number of car, the Vietnamese road is not secure for too many cars ). And Moving in the road in Vietnam is dangerous like in the war. Each year, we lost one division because of accident :fie:
