What's new

Dhaka metro construction finally begins tomorrow

Why it seems every infrastructure project is way more xpensive in Bangladesh? @Nilgiri

Less ability you have to do things, more outsiders can charge you for bringing in technology and more importantly decent project operations.....if you have no domestic tenders to compete, well you are going to be getting some high premiums for hand-holding and inability to negotiate well. So off the bat that adds a huge % to cost seen elsewhere.

Add to this high population density of BD (thus high land costs) and deep set corruption, which means project handlers have to take out much more insurance than needed because they know there will likely be many delays in planned liquidity flows (remember this means lost money so high cap loan providers demand insurance in return - it comes in many forms but shows in project cost both at start and at final).

Man its not only Bangladesh, there many countries where conditions are if not exactly same but almost same. Even in Malaysia they build roads quite high to the ground. but the cost is way low than Bangladesh. Even i was amazed when i read they are bulding4 Lane expressway around 30 KM at the cost of 2-3 Billion dollar. Damn we have 300KM motorway at 6 lane at the same cost. so there is some thing wrong some where @Nilgiri

JICA is funding the metro rail project. It did all the technical, field and quantity surveys of the project, calculated the possible project cost, set the codes and standards for design & construction, and then floated an international tender. Now, you guys and your Indian cousins are coming up with so many excuses as if you guys are all veteran of civil engineering. Do not please compare apple with orange. All JICA projects are very top grade ones that requires money to design and build. JICA projects are not the projects your 3rd rate country is accustomed to.

India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Pakistan all JICA recipients country and JICA projects in that countries is very much larger and complex compared to what would be soon executed ones of Metro railway in BD

I'm surprised that Padma bridge project require importing stones from India by trucks when I watched OBOR documentary about BD.

Dude, this 21km expressway will be completely elevated, along with I think further 20kms of approach roads as well as numerous feeder roads. $1.7 billion is quite reasonable. And yes, this will be the largest of its kind in South Asia and one of the largest in the world.

About the Metro, all the equipment and designs are coming from Japan, so the higher cost. In India, they source most of the equipment locally while in Pakistan, the project is implemented by the Chinese whose products are cheaper than the Japanese, hence the lower cost.

Lmfao are u kiding me the u need to go out from ur world to see real world. the world longest is in Thailand which is 55 KM long 6 lane express way at the cost of 1 Billion USD. At that time Thai Bhat was 37 to 1 Usd and currently it is around 32-33 to 1 USD in case u want to say oh it was built long ago thats why it was cheap.

2nd one is in Chine which is over sea Bridge of 41.58km, making it the world's second longest road bridge. The oversea bridge, built at a cost of RMB 9.04bn (approximately $1.38bn), was opened to traffic in May 2011, becoming the world's longest oversea bridge.

U know what u guys have excuse to hide corruption and by saying oh no every thing is coming from Japan and it will be out of the world as u can see moon and sun from it also. thats why its too much expensive. If chinese are building cheap in Pakistan. then i think u guys should ask Chinese to build one for you and save money for your country.

We are comparing cost here right? So kindly enlighten me the cost of 1.7 Billion for this much elevated bridge with 4 lane. Around the world.

Well here is recent example from Malaysia. It costs around 1.1 Billion USd. Length 24 KM. Its above sea.

First, I'm talking about elevated expressways, not bridges over water bodies. In such kind, the Dhaka Elevated Expressway will indeed be the longest in South Asia and one of the longest in the world. In this context, only the Bang Na expressway of Thailand is comparable, with a length of about 55km though I'm not sure how much of it is elevated. The DEE is about 40kms long in total. And there is an additional cost of land acquisition with elevated expressways, unlike the bridges over water bodies.

Second, about the costs, the Bang Na expressway was completed in 2000 when the value of dollar was way below than what it is now. I'm talking about the inflation of USD, not exchange rates between Bath and USD.

When an LDC calls your country 3rd world! It's like a street beggar laughing that you can only afford a BMW instead of a Lamborgini!!

It means something when a 1st or 2nd world country calls you as 3rd world.

A 4th or 5th world country (whatever LDC is) calling you such...well, aint that some cute butthurt! :P

Read my post again Lang ba is 55KM elevated expressway and its 6 lane. Let me make it simple.its elevated length is 55 KM. and it costed them around 1 Billion USD and ofcourse their labour will b expensive than in Bangladesh. So i dont know how u can still say there is no corruption in it?

For metro train their excuse was bec Japanese are bringing everything from Japan thats why its expensive. For elevated Dhaka Expressway i dont know wat excuse they will have. I think will even import mud and stones from Other countries too to show see every thing is imported thats why its expensive.
