Dhaka-Ctg road to have eight lanes​

The arterial four-lane Dhaka-Chattogram highway will have eight lanes to handle the growing pressure of traffic as the making of a design of the expansion work is well underway.

Physical work on the three-phase project, which will also have six lanes in parts, is likely to start by 2025, according to official sources.

The Roads and Highway Department (RHD) started doing the designing job in sync with five foreign and local firms in April with a projection to end in 18 months.

Sources said the RHD submitted three project plans to convert 229 kilometres of the highway into six and eight lanes at Tk 731.51 billion.

The first phase covers 38 km of Dhaka, Narayanganj and Munshiganj at Tk 82.68 billion, the second phase is 125 km from Comilla to Feni at Tk 459.41 billion and the third phase 66 km from Feni to Chattogram at Tk 189.42 billion.
RHD sources said the Asian Development Bank (ADB) would finance the highway expansion project.

RHD additional chief engineer Md Sabbir Hasan Khan said the design work might end in October next year, adding that the construction work may begin in 2025.

The highway, which has four lanes now, will have mostly eight lanes and somewhere six lanes, according to him. The authorities are focused that the design will have no interlinking roads with the highway to make vehicular movement smoother on it.

"The highway will have both underpasses and overpasses," Mr Khan told the FE.

Incumbent FBCCI president Mahbubul Alam, who was also president of Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry, wrote to the ministry concerned several times during his tenure as the CCCI chief to make it an eight-lane highway. "We always demanded to make it an eight-lane highway for the transportation of cargoes and containers from Chattogram seaport and transshipment facilities for the neighbouring country."

Citing roads and highways as a prerequisite for development, Mr Alam said Chattogram is the economic hub of the country and export-import goods are mostly transported to different parts through this highway.

Moreover, Chattogram being considered as the most suitable place for investment in South and South-East Asia has made it the most important corridor, he said.

"Besides, pressure of vehicles on Dhaka-Chattogram highway mounts after starting the Mirersarai Economic Zone in Chattogram. So, the business community always demands to make it an eight-lane highway."

Dhaka Chittagong highway is so close to the border that if India's BSF wants they can halt our export/import by firing small arms such as a rifle. We need to build a new highway that is far away from the Indian border to connect Dhaka to Chittagong.

Why would they do it? If India really wants to do that, then, it can do so by firing weapons, even if the road is well inside.

All scenarios are created after due considerations of all facts. Scenarios should not be created out of imagination. That appears to be the case here.

Because, by that criteria, all Europian nations, US, Canada and many other countries, would have made their own life difficult, which they haven’t.

Similar way, India also has a very similar situation in the chicken neck. Where the width is even narrower than this.

There is no reason for Bangladesh to start creating imagery scenarios of a military conflict with India. It has reached where it is economically, because of focusing on economy and not military. One good example regarding this is Paksiatn. It has been completely consumed by their desire to be a security state.

It would be better, if Bangladesh focuses on developing infrastructure based on all other aspects, except military. With a high population density spread all across, including areas close to the border, it would augur well to stop worrying about military angles and focus on other more realistic factors.

Right now the highway is within the range of small arms like submachine guns. So, the highway needs to be constructed somewhere else. The 30km range is ok as long as it is beyond the range of small firearms.

Bangladesh has no plan to be a military power in Asia. It has a desire to achieve a credible deterrence against India in a cost effective manner though.

So called deterrence has to be based on a threat assessment. If it is based on views of many members in pdf, then you don’t need deterrence but full fledged offensive capabilities. Because large number of them have been trying to fan non-existent threats from India.

Deterrence would require entire spectrum of weapons on ground, in air , on water and under water. How many times has such a situation occurred?

Otherwise, BD is doing fine and should focus on it’s economy like it has been since 1971. Unless you all want to take a vow like Paksiatn - “we will eat grass but defend our nation”. You all want to eat grass? When it is not required by creating a non-existent demon?

Bangladesh does not need to make preparation to face the entire Indian army. Our preparation would be to face only the Eastern Command of the Indian army.

Just do some research and look at the strength of Indian defence forces in the Eastern theatre.

Moreover, it doesn’t work like that. Threat assessment has to involve a little more. Believe me, you don’t need to deter India because there is no such scenario at all.

Your country presents a very good case study, of what to do and what not to. Your mention is bound to happen, whenever economic and security factors have to be spoken about. Sadly, it is for non worthy reasons on both aspects.

Bangladesh has done well economically, because of not unnecessarily trying to finger everything and everyone around it, like Paksiatn. Moment they loose sight of that, they have a path to follow, that has been laid, lit and taken by Pakistan. The end is known to all.
