Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal (Lotus Kamal) has said government has been contemplating to construct metro rail network in Dhaka and elevated expressway from Dhaka to Chittagong.

"We have decided to carry out feasibility studies for construction of elevated-expressway from Dhaka to Chittagong and laying metro-rail network in Dhaka. However, approval Committee's decisions are not final," Minister said at a press briefing organized by Planning Commission at the conference room of National Economic Commission (NEC).

Minister also said, "First project has been proposed to be implemented under Public- Private Partnership (PPP). ADB, JICA and other Chinese and Japanese private companies have shown keen interest to finance in good projects."

1,500 projects are being implemented. ECNEC has approved 203 projects at a projected cost of Tk 1195.29 billion. Tk 600 billion has been allocated to the revised ADP, of which 67% was spent.

Minister said,"We are optimistic that by June we can spend most of the allocated fund."

Look East Policy
In reply to a question, planning minister said government should have embarked on its 'Look East policy' much earlier.

Recently, Prime Minister visited Japan and China. Japan pledged to provide $6 billion in development works in the next 4/5 years during PM's trip. While during her China visit, China signed deals and MoUs with Bangladesh over various projects including construction of a tunnel under the river Karnaphuli.

Employment of 1.9 million people next year

In reply to another question, Planning Commission (GED) member Shamsul Alam said,"There will be employment of 1.9 million people. 1% GDP growth translates into employment of 250 thousand people. So, 7% projected growth rate of GDP will mean that 1.9 million people will be employed next year."

I am interested to know which of the towns on way to Chittgong, this elevated highway will touch. Any information about this? I have seen many elevated highways in Japan. The purpose of building such expensive overhead highways is missed if these routes go just parallel to the existing non-toll highways. Usually, bypass roads are built to connect with the existing roads.

Complete the 4 lane highways first. Stupid guys

Yea, as usual putting the cart before the horse. I never understand the BD business community, build factories in Dhaka, then transport the goods all the way to Chittagong! Reason, so the owners can have the factories closer to where they live Dhaka!

There is an under-utilised port near Khulna, with cheaper land prices, but everyone wants to live in Dhaka! Ahhhhh

I am interested to know which of the towns on way to Chittgong, this elevated highway will touch. Any information about this? I have seen many elevated highways in Japan. The purpose of building such expensive overhead highways is missed if these routes go just parallel to the existing non-toll highways. Usually, bypass roads are built to connect with the existing roads.

As you mentioned that Japan has many overhead highways which is not common in other countries. Could you shed some light how these highways are faring and how is the accident scenario. Do you feel fatigue in long drive or how is the noise condition. I am very interested to know.

This is very much needed. As land becomes scarce, elevated highway is the way to go. According to surveys, Dhaka-Ctg highway would need to be expanded into 6 lanes by 2020 and 8 lanes by 2030 because of the rising traffic.

There has to be a reason why dhk n ctg road would need to be expanded.Port and port related businesses. Why not use Mongla port,keep the pressure on ctg port to controllable, expand businesses to other part of the country and improve infrastructure between other city's connected to dhk by road.Wouldn't it be the logical,economical and sensible decision to take?

Mongla port is open for business, nobody stops anybody of using it. Businessmen abandoned it when port worker robbed the whole ship in early 90's and took it home. You need to change the mentality of the local people first. Khulnite chased BEXIMCO out of the shrimp business. Same problem with Barishaillas. Thats why no development there.

Elevated expressway should start somewhere in the west of Gazhipur/Mawna point, traverse through the forest and paddy land, comes to Mirpur point (but, a little away from the congested roads), goes to the west of Narayanganj.

Other people, please think about the remaining length of the route.

I don't think whole route will be elevated, but land acquisition is always a problem, the delay for this thing even leaves the investors frustrated. Lets see what happens.

It doesn't matter how we think the roads should go.The KUTUBs we have in higher power to decide that will find the most twisted complicated and expensive way that will intercept dhk city making our lives more difficult.

Not sure what the definition is of "elevated" is but they are eyesores and the US spent billions tearing one short stretch down and moving it underground.
