Dhaka concerned as India plans to build 2 more dams
Official letter sent to Delhi

Published : Thursday, 20 December 2012

After Tipaimukh, India is again planning unilaterally to build two hydroelectricity dams on two common rivers in its Meghalaya state, and Bangladesh has expressed concern over it, reports bdnews24.com.

The government has officially taken up the issue with the Indian authorities and expressed its concern, sources in the foreign and water resources ministries told the news agency.

"We have learnt that they are planning to build two dams for producing hydroelectricity on Umiew and Myntdu rivers in Meghalaya state, which they cannot do without prior consultation with the downstream country," said a senior official in the Water Resources Ministry.

"We asked them not to proceed with the projects," he said.

"These two are common rivers and Bangladesh would not allow any construction on any common river without proper study."

Citing example of Tipaimukh dam on Barak river in Manipur state, the official said, "Bangladesh raised its concern over Tipaimukh and now we are conducting a joint study on the impact of the dam on the country."

The sub-group of the Joint River Commission (JRC) started its study in September this year and is expected to come up with a conclusion in Jan 2014, he said.

Although the Indian authorities are yet to give any feedback on the letter or communicate with the government about when they would provide any feedback, Bangladesh would raise the issue at different operational level meetings in the future, he added.

A foreign ministry senior official said the government sent the letter last week and another letter is expected to be sent next week.

"We will raise the issue at different platforms in addition to the operational level meetings of the JRC," he said.

"It can be a letter from our foreign ministry to the Indian external affairs ministry or (we can raise it) at the Foreign Office Consultation or Joint Consultative Commission (JCC) meeting," he said.

Well BD wants to study it then sure we are all on for it. We will not hurt the BD agriculture sector by stopping their water. Dams are always good for rivers because you can regulate the flow of the rivers. Moreover, this will drastically reduce the wastage of the water. There will be no difference in the flow of the rivers. We are not diverting them to other direction. Hopefully BD will understand the Indian hunger for power and cooperate on the project. Its a win-win.

We have heard all these indian lie with Farakka dam, Gajoldoba dam etc. Indian "win-win" means accept indian lie and interest at the expanse of Bangladeshi one. India only understands language of force.

You think that BD can teach India a lesson with force
Well thats good too. Because after invading BD we don't need to ask for any permissions. We can just build the dam and let the millions of poor and hungry die.

I would say the same thing that the Chinese diplomat said to Singaporean diplomat in a press conference: "India is big country and BD is tiny piece of land, and this is the fact so you need to stfu and listen to us"

Bangladeshis are different, we don't think one directional way like you and most indian do. So you can spam with bs and chest thumping message but you will feel the sting at the end just like india getting from SriLanka and Maldives lately. That is typical end result for indian "win-win".

Wasn't there supposed to be a contract agreement over this issue?

Again the question is that if a dam is built water is not getting diverted???...So what is the concern of BD? Is it about stopping the water of something else??? If there is diversion of water then i feel that this is wrong....But if there is no diversion of water then BD should be part of the dam project rather than opposing it....Even i feel India GOV should offer a joint investment mechanism where power would be generated and distributed equally to both the nations....In this case, no one will have any suspicion to other nation....

.
Bangladeshi reservations are understandable, But I am sure the proposed conditions wont adversely affect Bangladesh.

That is the biggest indian lie we had experiences with Farakka, Gajoldoba and other indian dams. India started these dams with lie that no water will be diverted and then start diverting water. India does not have any credibility and Bangladesh should not waste any time engaging circular lie but work on plan including creating proper hedge to mitigate and thwart indian destructive activities against Bangladesh.

.
I am not expert on India BD river issues...but is there any international law that prevents upper country can not divert water from a dam?...If there is law like that then how come China is building a dam in Bramhaputra and BD is not opposing it. Ultimately Bramhaputra is the main river that goes through India and BD..

Typical Indian mentality. U can't expect anything more from terrorist who have been drying up our rivers starting from the farraka dam of 72 till today. Hope this 2 piece hypocrites won't lecture China on building dams & ask from gratefulness from BD. The atrocities committed by India after 71 exceed the hyper exaggerated atrocities in 71 war. But still propaganda will go on dividing the country into "muti-juddher poker shakti" and "bipok-ker shakti". Pathetic.

Of course we wont lecture China in case China blocks some portion of Brmhaputra river. Because that will ultimately give us an excuse to do the same for all the rivers that goes from India to BD...
So are you really like to see this situation to happen in future???....Just think about it....

Some grand BD want China to become their master. THey have no concern if China builds dam over Brahmaputra. Last time China was constructing 128 hydro elecric power stations across brahmaputra, with no diversion of river of course.

I think India should make BD equal stakeholder in it and can station BD engineers there to ensure trust. people should benifit.

BD is a potential member  of pearls string , now begging to India for its survival its really funny. I think India won't miss this chance to screw up BD.

I think this is a good idea....Once the dam is built, BD engineers or civil society members can be a member of the coordination comitee to oversee about the issue of water diversion. At least that will help to reduce the trust deficit between both the nations...
