Says Chinese defence attaché

The defence attaché of China in Bangladesh on Monday said the two countries have been maintaining close military ties over the past four decades and will forge closer defence relations in the future.
“China is not only a reliable and affordable source of weapons and equipment for Bangladesh armed forces, but also provides military training and technology,” said Senior Colonel Zhang Wei, military, naval and air attaché of China in Bangladesh.
Addressing a reception to celebrate the 90th founding anniversary of Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) at a hotel in the capital, he highlighted the steady and rapid progress in China-Bangladesh military cooperation in the last few years.
He said the Chinese PLA naval task group visited Chittagong for a second time in past two years, which played a positive role in promoting mutual trust and understanding, deepening the exchanges and cooperation, improving the ability to jointly respond to maritime threats and safeguard regional stability.
Increasing number of Bangladesh officers also went to China for training and exchange, he added, according to a Chinese embassy press release.
Zhang Wei said, “Chinese President Xi Jinping and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have reached a series of consensus on bilateral relations, and agreed to upgrade the bilateral ties to a strategic partnership of cooperation, which injects new impetus into the growth of our relations.”
With common efforts, he said the two sides will forge closer defence relations in the future, which include a growing number of high-level exchange visits, training programmes, joint exercises, defence procurement and security cooperation.
