Dhaka airport ill-equipped for bird strikes

CAAB must adopt modern, innovative methods to ensure flight safety

We are alarmed by the lack of preparedness to prevent bird strikes at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka, as revealed by a report by The Daily Star on Friday. According to the report, the central airport in the country is ill-prepared for such strikes which may cause flight cancellations, minor to heavy damage to an aircraft's structure leading to costly repairs, and in rare instances, loss of life due to crash landing. HSIA's bird control system is rudimentary at best. It relies on only two guns for the purpose. Four other guns remain out of order. The two automated bird deterrents installed on the runway, one using laser beams and the other using sound signals, have been out of service for more than seven years. Given the threats bird collision poses to aircrafts, this level of preparedness is far from adequate.
Airport authorities globally allocate significant resources to drive birds away from key aviation installations. This is because while a bird strike can occur anytime during a flight, it nearly always happens during take-off and landing. The severity of damage to an aircraft depends on the size and number of birds or the ferocity of collisions. Jet engines are particularly vulnerable to such incidents, leading to a loss of thrust following the ingestion of the bird. But the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) seems to be indifferent to the danger. At HSIA alone, at least 20 aircrafts of Biman suffered bird strikes in 2019; other airliners also suffered similar accidents, although the airport authorities couldn't give an exact number. One can assume that the cumulative costs of aircraft repairs and flight cancellations caused every year will far outweigh the cost of installing a modern system that can automatically detect and deter birds. Why CAAB still hasn't installed one is a mystery to us.
Bird strikes are a fairly common occurrence in airports around the country. In order for any collision prevention policy to be effective, aviation experts suggest a combination of measures using both modern and conventional methods (since when you follow one specific method to drive away birds, it does not work after some days as birds usually adapt to it). Experts think CAAB should also take measures to encourage birds to seek alternative nesting and feeding grounds by removing food sources such as seed-bearing plants and food sources for the insects that birds eat, covering nearby ponds with netting to prevent birds from landing, and clearing bushes and trees that offer attractive nesting sites. The aviation authorities must adequately respond to the danger bird strikes pose and take all necessary measures to ensure flight safety in our airports.

Once the new terminal is built how are they going to manage the additional flights ?

Seriously hope trash labors and public’s are kept at terminal 1 and 2, don’t want them to ruin terminal 3

last year it was worse, only one of the gun was in working order 😂
dhaka airport is ill equipped with everything from terminal to runways to taxi ways and aprons nothing is there its dhaka bus stand .
Hey, atleast flight safety is better than Pakistan and PIA

Runways in Bangladesh are unsafe because of incompetent and ignorant CAAB administrators. That is all.

These idiots do not know - or probably do know and not acknowledge that they have to step up their game.

Even in Thailand, whose size of economy we're fast approaching, they take far better care of their grass areas around their airport runways and aprons. I have been observing the difference at Bangkok and even Malaysia for the better part of two decades. S'pore you don't have to approach, but do the bare minimum.

I mean how much easier can Allah make this for these CAAB idiots??

The grass and brush grow by themselves, all these idiots have to do is farm out contracts for mowing the damn grounds every week, at least at the end of and along the runways...SMH. These tractor pulled rotary mowing attachments/implements are probably the same as rice reapers and are already made locally.

Incompetent retards...:tsk:

Once the new terminal is built how are they going to manage the additional flights ?

They are planning to build a new control tower with the 3rd Terminal, which will ease air traffic control using more recent technology. A second runway at Shahjalal was also planned, but given the plans for an entirely new airport outside Dhaka, that is probably in the back-burner. This airport (Shahjalal) will probably revert to regional flights another decade from now, when they build the new one.

The airport when designed by the French in the early sixties was state of the art and better than anything in the subcontinent at that time. It was designed with enough advanced features (such as ground traffic control and apron traffic direction) which were bleeding edge at the time, but things change. I am sure they can still utilize one runway for traffic, but the ground traffic pattern needs to be more efficient, like in Heathrow, Atlanta and Los Angeles.

In Los Angeles - the ground traffic for directing aircraft to boarding bridges works with separate lanes for vehicular traffic (for replenishing food, water, sanitation for flights) and is completely designed around the terminals. The system works beautifully like clockwork. I have knowledge of it as an aviation enthusiast. The VHF/UHF channels and frequencies for air traffic and ground traffic are different, to avoid confusion and accidents. Once landed, pilots are asked to contact Ground control radio frequency.

The new 3rd terminal tower at Shahjalal will also use the data from the new civilian air radar from Thales and increase revenue for over-flights above Bangladesh, which the CAAB idiots have been oblivious about so far. Bangladesh lost hundreds of millions from all the ASEAN overflights going to EU and ME, which were promptly snagged by Kolkata Air Traffic Control, in the absence of any Dhaka CAAB air traffic action. Sanghi Chori again on a massive scale.

Atleast A-380 can land in Pakistan unlike BD however you are still living on our donated left over things....

**** off silly wanker , all you do is talk $hit to people that even slightly criticizes Pakistan

compare it it with some real airlines PIA is scrap . and pakistani airports are 100 times better then BD airport .

how they will allot slots with one runway ? unless new air port in made can not be allot slots more then a runway can handle .

Dying elephant meh. Everyone knows narrow body jets are the future. Even 777s are becoming rarity
The airport was made after the war. 10 years after to be exact.
speaking of donations, it’s good to see you back, must have had a steal of a day with begging bowl full of sikka
Don’t waste it all on internet though. Buy some grass to eat too 😂😂😂

BIMAN is crap too just a tad bit less smelly than PIA, as a aviation enthusiast it sucks though, PIA used to be the best in the world.
don’t worry. Third terminal is under construction, it will be beautiful according to the videos. More airports underway. 1&2 terminal will be overhauled one by one since they’re stillpoorly utilized

They’re building another, found too many ww2 bombs at the construction site

ohhh common man PIA did not serve fish

the real issue is not only terminal the issue is this place is very small and very bad to be a good airport you make a terminal but a hard landing will shut down airport . even 3rd grade cities have now 2-3 runways many rapid exit taxiways and large aprons to handle dozens of aircraft at the time of need .

BIMAN doesn’t serve fish either 😭
Airport is being expanded. That area is huge, plenty of forestry... can be cleared out to expand as necessary

but i can see its only suitable for heli base not even airbase let alone airport sir . unless BD move thousands of small homes from there .
