We're classified as a hybrid system and there's a lot of truth to it. Army interference is only alleged of course, but it's there. Even if one only considers the level of elite capture of Pakistan's society and politics, we can still classify the current system alone on that basis as "hybrid".

Well, the democracy index that you are talking about here actually proves @peagle's argument and disproves yours

When PMLN took over in 2013, Pakistan's score was 4.64/10 on the democracy index. During PMLN's 5 years tenure the score kept decreasing and in 2018 it fell down to 4.1 (really close to getting classified as an authoritarian regime at 4)

From 2018 to 2021 during PTI's tenure this downward spiral was reversed and the score got back to 4.31 in 2020.

In other words, PMLN's 5 years marked a significant shift towards authoritarian regime (from a hybrid regime) and PTI's 4 years mark a progress towards being classified as a flawed democracy (from a hybrid regime)

If we want to make unfounded political interpretations of the above, we can also make the equally questionable interpretation that when PMLN took over we were at our lowest on the index, and when they left, we were at our highest - and have fallen consistently since then. Etc. But this is a meaningless statement without actually digging into methodology and data.

And if you notice, we were actually farthest from authoritarianism when we were literally in dictatorship. So for yearly swings, you should definitely dig into the reports themselves and see if you can ascertain the reason the numbers might fluctuate. I would presume that the Economist doesn't care to dig into Pakistani politics too much. They probably use their own apolitical methodology to classify us as hybrid.

Briefly looking at the 2020 DI report, they don't cite any reason for the fluctuation, but of all the metrics Pakistan is judged on we rank the lowest for "Electoral process and pluralism". You can find the report here.

A failing state with no drone strikes won't be a history to be proud of. We shouldn't cherrypick --- let's focus on the holistic picture.

I agree that IK has more self respect than the past leaders, but his governance style and administrative capacity have been pretty pathetic so far. Of course, the other options are too scary to ever consider --- but IK needs to up his game, massively.
