Delhi - History and Geography with a view to Defense issues

One of the reasons why I am very happy that the Center did not make Hyderabad a Union Territory(UT). UT's are owned and run by the GoI, instead of the states.

When a city becomes very contested by different parties, GoI steps in and makes it neutral by taking it(declaring it as a UT).

It happened when Punjab and Haryana were split. Both laid claim to Chandigarh. Center took the decision to make Chandigarh as a UT. The result of this is that Chandigarh is a common capital for both Punjab and Haryana. And neither are going to leave it. Had this not happened, then either Punjab or Haryana would have been forced to build a new capital, and a decade later, it would have yielded them much in terms of better standard of living and taxes.

Unfortunately no politician in India wants to work for long term prosperity, just short term gains.

This time, when Andhra Pradesh and Telangana were being split, Andhra was demanding the same thing, that Hyderabad be declared as UT.
Fortunately though, the Center refused. Telangana got Hyderabad. And now Andhra Pradesh will now have to build a new city of its own. Its already in the process of identifying land for the new city and their Chief Minister has said he will make a great city.

Good enough for me.

Excellent observation! However, this makes sense if Federal government shares some expense and the state inheriting the contested city is made to shell out some resources for the loss to the state that is forced to build a capital anew. After all shared resources are spent in developing a capital. If Federal rules over someone to their loss, it has an obligation to compensate.

Did something like that happen?

He is. He is mentioned in the Wikipedia excerpt that I copied above. Feel free to find him out and share with us his legacy.

Well in 1912 Baker came to India to work with Lutyens, and went on to design the Secretariat Building, New Delhi and Parliament House in New Delhi and the bungalows of Members ofParliament. Baker designed the two Secretariat buildings flanking the great axis leading to what was then the Viceroy of India's Palace, now known as Rashtrapati Bhavan(President's House).

We need someone like him...Chandigarh has the largest number of vehicles per capita in India. Wide, well maintained roads and parking spaces all over the city ease local transport. You'll hardly see a traffic jam in Chandigarh.

Slowly and steadily we are trying to move out of Delhi, this should be an indicator of it...

Proposal for a new building (Parliament house)
A new Parliament building may replace the existing complex. The new building is being considered on account of the stability concerns regarding the current complex.[2] A high powered committee to suggest alternatives to the current building has been set up by the Speaker, Meira Kumar. The present building, an 85 year old structure suffers from inadequacy of space to house members and their staff and is thought to suffer from structural issues. The building also needs to be protected because of its heritage tag.

Just because our nation builders made a mistake some 50-60 yrs ago doesnt mean we have to live with it forever.
There are many disadvantages of Delhi
1) it is located on a seismically sensitive zone.
2) Closer to Pak and China.
3) it is overly populated.
4) Nagpur would also be closer to the financial capital of India...Mumbai.

Well the original thread where this topic was being discussed is a thread on weapons and ergo my post was about Indian security.
Not many in Pakistan think and behave like you(here I must tell you that most of the Pakistanis I have met in real life are gentlemen to the core but somehow some on this forum occasionally prove me wrong).
If you ask me I would want Pakistan and India to get back together like 2 brothers lost in kumbh ka mela (I am assuming you know what it means :) )

how many know that the ancient name of dehli/dilli as we know it was named after a genral in rajput army .. dille singh ;) it was called lal kot then

Uncle Google does't tell anything about dille singh. However, it says:

The Etymology and idioms of “Delhi” is uncertain, but many possibilities exist. The very common view is that its eponym is Dhillu or Dilu, a king of the Mauryan dynasty, who built the city in 50 BC and named it after himself. The Hindi/Prakrit word dhili (“loose”) was used by the Tomaras to refer to the city because the Iron Pillar built by Raja Dhava had a weak foundation and was replaced. The coins in circulation in the region under the Tomaras were called dehliwal. Some other historians believe that the name is derived from Dilli, a corruption of dehleez or dehali—Urdu for ‘threshold’—and symbolic of city as a gateway to the Gangetic Plain. Another theory suggests that the city’s original name was Dhillika or Dehilika.

The Persianized surname Dahelvi is also related to residents of Delhi.

Is that right? Never came across this one. I guess one learns something new every day. Can you cite a source or something?

The Central Govt does give compensation by way of grants, loans and tax breaks to the state that looses.

The state that gets to keep the capital does'nt give jack. That is a problem. For example, Telangana is now getting the massive city of Hyderabad that has been made and developed using revenues from both the state of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The real irony in this situation is that the current Chief Minister of current Andhra Pradesh- Chandrababu Naidu, is also the man who actually developed Hyderabad when he was the CM of United Andhra Pradesh.

He planned and got built most of modern Hyderabad from the small backwater city that it was. He brought in the corporates, convinced everyone from Microsoft to GE to all, to open their technology centers, got the whole industry ecosystem developed. Made Hyderabad what it is today - a leading tech city in India second only to Bangalore with dozens of fortune 500 companies working there.

And today, he has to do everything all over again. He will get compensation from Center, but not from the Telangana Govt.

EDIT and afterthought : I suppose in a way it is good it happened this way. Out of the CM of Telangana and Andhra, its Naidu of Andhra who is the capable one. He has the brains and drive to build a great city and a better state.

Had Andhra Pradesh won the city, then the CM of Telangana would never have been able to develop a good capital and would have become useless and rudderless. They would have never recovered from the loss. Atleast Telangana gets a running city on autopilot mode with a good state.

I feel much better now.

Oh and please keep in mind (and i think you know already)-- this forum attracts a lot of maggots and flies from both sides of the border.

What else you can expect when people like you and I are exchanging Laddus and gulab jamuns. (OK enough of this sweetness, more maggots and flies will be jumping in soon).

Happy Ramzan to all.

That's a bummer. Seriously. Telangana gets Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh gets nothing? That is not fair. If I were a resident of Andhra Pradesh, I would be totally bummed out. All that hard work and gone in an instant. That is a heart-breaker.

I had come across some news about this Telangana-AP thing and Hyderabad being a serious issue. I had not known that Telangana finally got Hyderabad.

True. That's life I suppose.

But maybe 2 decades from now the people of Andhra Pradesh thank God that they lost Hyderabad. Maybe Naidu develops a city that betters Delhi and Bombay, let alone Hyderabad.

He is a city builder and he has never had a free hand before. I would wager that he builds a major city in under 10 years. He has a clean slate, massive money from the Center. Also, he will get full support from Central Govt(Modi). Modi is running the most efficient Government we have had in decades and is a major supporter of infrastructure development.

Lot of things are going for Andhra Pradesh as well. Now only time will tell what bears of it.

.
Well there is talk may be two years ago that Nagpur or Hydrabad should be made as 2nd capital and from this all South & Central zone work be done.As Delhi is far away from this region it will save time & work will complete in time
