In a move to combat the increasing pollution levels in the capital city of India, the State Government of Delhi initiated the trials of Olectra-BYD’s 12 Meter electric bus – eBuzz K9 with a 35+1 (Driver) seating capacity. Flagged off by the Transport Minister of Delhi Kailash Gahlot from Delhi Secretariat, the ‘Make in India’ eBuzz K9 from Olectra-BYD will run on route number 534 between Anand Vihar ISBT to Mehrauli Terminal. These trials, which will be conducted for 3 months, will enable the authorities to evaluate the efficiency and competency of the buses in the standard road conditions of Delhi. Under an endeavor to promote usage of zero-emission Electric Vehicles, Delhi government aims to induct Electric Buses in the Public Transport system.

According to a study from the World Health Organization, 9 out of every 10 people in the world breathe air that contains high levels of pollutants and kills 7 million people each year. It further highlighted that air pollution is mainly responsible for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), causing 24% of all adult deaths from heart disease, 25% from stroke, 43% from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and 29% from lung cancer.




On the occasion of flagging off of the electric buses, N. Naga Satyam, Executive Director – Olectra Greentech Limited commented, “As a part of our commitment to contribute to the efforts of ensuring a healthy environment to the public, these Delhi trials is yet another step towards conversion of fossil fueled vehicles to a zero-emission transport option. Olectra BYD buses are proven successful in all the terrains across the country. Olectra-BYD is the only one player in India which has its electric buses commercially running in 4 states and we aim to continue our leadership in the eBus segment.”


The eBuzz K9 model is powered by a Lithium-ion iron phosphate battery which provides a running of upto 300 KMs on a single charge. Olectra-BYD buses are designed and manufactured under a strategic tie-up between Olectra Greentech Ltd and BYD Auto Industry Co. Ltd.


The Electric Buses from Olectra-BYD has already been commercially running in Himachal Pradesh, Mumbai, Telangana and Kerala proving its durability and ability to run on terrains and traffic conditions of all kinds. The company says that their buses have completed more than 5,00,000 Kms on Indian roads and have reduced CO2 emissions up to 524 tonnes till now which would have required 2,619 trees instead.

Electric buses should be implemented in more of metro's. Especially the NCR.

I don't think enforcing eBuses is a problem.

The main issue is having personal electric vehicles.

China has had a major success as it forced people to buy EVs over diesel and petrol vehicles through heavy license plate registration fees. Something our corrupt CMs and MPs have no interest in. The part of the reason is also that all oil suppliers are government companies and technically speaking, the government would be cannibalising its own revenue source.

HPCL and IOCL will have no interest in moving into EVs anytime soon.

Delhi's main problem is that people have a show-off culture there; they tend to see car as a status symbol even today when there is no bloody space to park your car anywhere. This, coupled with free hand given to banks, easy vehicle loans have become a nuisance.

All city and state governments need to start adopting the Shanghai model in enforcing EVs and promoting concessions for those petrol pumps having charging stations, in the form of lowest GST brackets for electric recharging stations among other things.

Also, all EV manufacturers need to be given a 10-year tax holiday for promoting cheaper EVs for personal usage replacing petrol vehicles.

Given that we have made large commitments to the Paris Accord, we appreciate this help.

I think that the new energy industry should be dominated by Private Companies. The government just provides incentives (tax cuts or even exemptions). If the government does not provide incentives. you should build your new energy business first. Then convince your government.

Take BYD for example. First of all, it has electric vehicle technology. Then the government supported it...

You can't wait for the government to do everything for you.

Absolutely. For large countries like China and India, having everyone owning a car is simply not going to be environmentally sustainable. In a way, India is in a better place in term of going EV in one go as opposed to switching from traditional fuel.

Hoping there is more policy support for EV, which will be huge boost for EV maker like BYD.

Btw, is there any e bike in India?

There are e-Bikes, but not very popular vis petrol ones unlike in China. They are mostly used by commuters in cities where petrol is expensive than electricity.
Thanks for that. E-bike should be extremely cheap to run, even its range is limited and time consuming to recharge (just like EV). It is probably going to get more popular in the next couple of years though.

Hopefully, but Li-ion batteries are not cheap. I have come across bikes that use Lead acid ones. Hopefully with more Chinese cooperation, things will get better.

I think the common ones in China are mostly on lead acid batteries as opposed to Li-ion(I could be wrong though as they look the same), which is reasonably cheap ($300-$500) according to alibaba and the range is a bit limited (50~60k per charge). The Li ion ones have much greater range but also cost a lot more, starting from ~$1000 per piece wholesale and will be more at retail shops.
