Delhi Gang-Rape Aftermath

.
This issue was highlighted too much in western media even like malala issue in pakistan

when you have not just rape but a judiciary that does not prosecute rape, it will get highlighted. I read someplace that only 1 out 900 cases pending were finally prosecuted...

sunlight is good ultimately to make the govt, people and institutions finally make the needed changes. if you hide it, it will only fester. many a great nations were shamed into making changes.

and what about men and guys who are just the mute spectators????kabhi bhi koi bhi help nhi karta..........i myself have faced situation.yaha par sabhi bol rahen hain par real life mein agar help karte toh...........saayad.................

I had read many Chinese girl visiting Indian alone, and never met these things, some of them even visited by bike alone for months

Do you think a few incidents means that it is a norm of life there? Many women live there and many more visits and some time psychos like the ones in this incident attacks which is shameful indeed but psychos are psychos/they are animals and don't represent society. There is no need to generalize such a thing and make incorrect assumptions!!

It was disgusting what happened to her but it seems to have united the country. Hopefully it will be eye opener for whole sub continent to do more to protect all women

Delhi anyhow is cutting New year celebrations this year!! This is a sad moment for the people!!

I would urge people to not even celebrate republic day in 2013. What's the use of being a republic with armed forces, police forces when such incidents are allowed to happen to our girls? Sad affair!!

Sir don't get so sensational.

India has got to be the worst place for a women to live in, high rates of infantcide, rape, torture, murder, forced marriage, the inability to go out when you please, see who you want, marry who you want. world's largest democracy that is if your a man.

The Global Gender Gap Report 2012 | World Economic Forum - The Global Gender Gap Report 2012

http://www3.weforum.org/docs/GGGR12/MainChapter_GGGR12.pdf

India ranks 105th out of 135 countries in the world on Global Gender Gap Index in 2012. Bad but not as bad as you say.

Just because our civil society and media are giving it so much attention doesn't mean these things or worse are not happening elsewhere.

No Bro, you are right. Not every women, but almost all women have faced sexual abuse in India. The greatest abusers are Husband. Our MOFO society has not told our men, how to treat our women. Our society don't teach us about sexual harrasment..

Unless ppl like you show us true image, we will not learn... We are behaving like "frog in well".

If you are talking about lewd comments then yes, otherwise you are BSing.

If you come to Delhi , i will show how many girls roam around after 11.00 PM at night especially on weekends even wearing mini-skirts.

But one thing is for sure using public transport is a big no in Delhi at least after 8.00 P.M for girls except for the Metro rail.

Most rapes are anyway done by friends , relatives or acquaintances. This woman was just very unlucky and made the mistake of taking am empty bus at 10 P.M on which there were only the 6 accused travelling and no other passengers.

Other cities outside North India are of course much safer for women.

You know what that is the first step towards improvement and I hope with more civil and media focus, things are only gonna improve. Btw, every country has their own fallacies like many countries can not even today think of a women president/prime minister and India is not the only country where such incidents have happened. But anyways Indians should not mind all this International attention and use this as their weapon to bring the change in society and the governing laws.

Who are you trying to explain?

That's true but this is capital of India so it should have better protection and fear of law in the minds of miscreants.

Most rapes are anyway done by friends , relatives or acquaintances.
That may or may not be always true.

This woman was just very unlucky and made the mistake of taking am empty bus at 10 P.M on which there were only the 6 accused travelling and no other passengers.
That's an example of bad law and order situation and that needs to change. Not only that, when she was thrown on the road there were people who turned blind eye and with no concern they let her bleed on the road. This is a extremely shameful behavior of the people. They are the bigger culprit in my eyes.

Other cities outside North India are of course much safer for women.
That's not true. These cases are coming to fore because media focus is more in Delhi and surrounding areas. There are worst acts that have happened in the rest of the country as well but media does not seem to be that active there.

Delhi women gun for licences; rape triggers big rush to acquire arms

NEW DELHI: The horrific attack on Nirbhaya has led to a spurt in requests for gun licences from women. Since December 18, the day the news of the brutal gang rape appeared in newspapers, the licensing department of Delhi Police has received a total of 274 applications from women. In addition, it has also been flooded with hundreds of queries on how to obtain a licence.

"We have received over 1,200 calls since that day. These include not only the average working woman, but even students who travel long distances to colleges and even their concerned parents. They were eager to find out more on the procedure to acquire arms," said a Delhi police officer.

Delhi police sources say hundreds more had turned up at their office itself. "We had to patiently tell them that one needs to have a clear danger to one's life to be given a licence. However, some of the parents were not happy with our replies. They said that with even public transport no longer safe in the city, they just cannot take chances. When we told them this could not be reason enough, we were told to give in writing that their daughters were indeed safe on Delhi's roads," said a source.

20% increase in self-defence classes in city

A member of the National Association for Gun Rights India claimed women were discriminated against. "Men are issued more gun licences than women in Delhi even if the later have genuine reasons to apply for them," said a member. "The fact that even parents are ready to hand over weapons to their daughters shows they are living in fear. There is a 20% increase in self-defence courses across the city," added the source.

In the past two years, Delhi cops have received over 800 applications for guns from women. While the year 2010 saw around 320 applications, the figure had risen to around 500 in 2011. But it's not only the numbers that's a break from the past. There's a change as well in the reasons cited. "Women earlier mostly cited the inheritance clause -- saying their fathers or husbands had a licence which they want to continue holding. Many women applying under this clause were proxies for men. But of late women are citing 'self-defence' to apply for a licence," said an officer in the licencing department.

In general, 20-22% of all applicants are now women. Since the past two weeks, the percentage has shot up to around 35%. The officer said 27 licences were issued to women in 2010. Of these, 17 applied under the inheritance clause. Till July this year, five women were granted licences for personal threats. In 2010 and 2011, over 600 applications were rejected as no "personal safety threat was assessed".
