A delegation member said upcoming general election will definitely be part of the discussion with BJP leaders during the visit
The Awami League will be sending a delegation to India next month to further develop relations with the neighbouring country and its ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The visit comes just nine months before the next general election and amid a tense political scenario following the arrest of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
A 20-member delegation led by ruling Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader will visit India on March 11. Other members of the delegation include Liberation War Affairs Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das, Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, Cultural Secretary Asim Kumar Ukil and International Secretary Shammi Ahmed and Presidium member Abdul Matin Khasru.
According to Awami League insiders, the visit is very important for the party ahead of the next general election.
A delegation member, requesting anonymity, said the present political situation of Bangladesh and the upcoming election will definitely be part of the discussion, among other things.
“Although a courtesy tour, the verdict of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and the country’s political scenario after her conviction will be discussed. The Awami League will also seek India’s support in the upcoming election to continue its journey in developing a de0mocratic Bangladesh,” a presidium member, seeking anonymity, said.
Sources in the Awami League told the Dhaka Tribune that the delegation will tour India for five days. During the tour, they will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav and other top politicians of the ruling party. The delegation will also sit with top brasses of Indian National Congress, popularly known as Indian Congress Party.
However, the Awami League has a better understanding with the Congress Party than the BJP, according to two organizing secretaries of the ruling party, who wished to remain unnamed.
They told the Dhaka Tribune that with this tour, the Awami League will try to build a good relationship with the Indian ruling party and convince them to support the Awami League in the upcoming election.
When contacted, International Affairs Secretary Shammi Ahmed said: “An Awami League delegation will visit India on March 11 as per invitation of BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav.”
However, she declined to make any comments on the tour plans.
Awami League Organizing Secretary Ahmed Hossain said: “It is just a political tour. Just like we visited
China and other countries, we will visit India to try to build a good relationship with the country’s political parties.
“No one should see this tour in any different way.”
Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi and Cultural Secretary Asim Kumar Ukil also refused to comment over the issue.
Sources said the Awami League has already submitted applications for Indian visas at Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
Other members of the Awami League who will accompany Obaidul Quader to India are joint general secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Abdur Rahman, organizing secretaries Ahmad Hossain, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan, Enamul Haque Shamim, Barrister Mohbiul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, Misbah Uddin Siraj, Mirza Azam, and Publicity and Publication Secretary Hasan Mahmud, Deputy office secretary Biplob Barua and Deputy publicity and publication secretary Aminul Islam Amin.
