A delegation member said upcoming general election will definitely be part of the discussion with BJP leaders during the visit

The Awami League will be sending a delegation to India next month to further develop relations with the neighbouring country and its ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The visit comes just nine months before the next general election and amid a tense political scenario following the arrest of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

A 20-member delegation led by ruling Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader will visit India on March 11. Other members of the delegation include Liberation War Affairs Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das, Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, Cultural Secretary Asim Kumar Ukil and International Secretary Shammi Ahmed and Presidium member Abdul Matin Khasru.

According to Awami League insiders, the visit is very important for the party ahead of the next general election.

A delegation member, requesting anonymity, said the present political situation of Bangladesh and the upcoming election will definitely be part of the discussion, among other things.

“Although a courtesy tour, the verdict of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and the country’s political scenario after her conviction will be discussed. The Awami League will also seek India’s support in the upcoming election to continue its journey in developing a de0mocratic Bangladesh,” a presidium member, seeking anonymity, said.

Sources in the Awami League told the Dhaka Tribune that the delegation will tour India for five days. During the tour, they will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav and other top politicians of the ruling party. The delegation will also sit with top brasses of Indian National Congress, popularly known as Indian Congress Party.

However, the Awami League has a better understanding with the Congress Party than the BJP, according to two organizing secretaries of the ruling party, who wished to remain unnamed.

They told the Dhaka Tribune that with this tour, the Awami League will try to build a good relationship with the Indian ruling party and convince them to support the Awami League in the upcoming election.

When contacted, International Affairs Secretary Shammi Ahmed said: “An Awami League delegation will visit India on March 11 as per invitation of BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav.”

However, she declined to make any comments on the tour plans.

Awami League Organizing Secretary Ahmed Hossain said: “It is just a political tour. Just like we visited
China and other countries, we will visit India to try to build a good relationship with the country’s political parties.

“No one should see this tour in any different way.”

Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi and Cultural Secretary Asim Kumar Ukil also refused to comment over the issue.

Sources said the Awami League has already submitted applications for Indian visas at Indian High Commission in Dhaka.

Other members of the Awami League who will accompany Obaidul Quader to India are joint general secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Abdur Rahman, organizing secretaries Ahmad Hossain, AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan, Enamul Haque Shamim, Barrister Mohbiul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, Misbah Uddin Siraj, Mirza Azam, and Publicity and Publication Secretary Hasan Mahmud, Deputy office secretary Biplob Barua and Deputy publicity and publication secretary Aminul Islam Amin.

Waqt ekbare kam re ba, we don’t have unlimited time in hand. Awami maloon league must be destroy before it’s too late.

We all need to do our parts from wherever and make sure next geneal election is not hijaked like last time.

People of Bd must given a chance to choose who they like to see run their country, not maloonistan.

What seems like Ghulami may not be.

International politics (especially South Asian politics in Bangladeshi context) is at a crossroads.

Do we tow Indian line or Chinese line?

At this point SHW is I think trying to please both.

Wait and see - 'Khatam' business can wait....

Country like srilanka, Nepal and Maldives stood up against Indian bullying and showed them middle finger.

We are not getting any damn thing from that country except give and saving Hasina’s chair. That’s it.

True we are not getting anything from India. Wish BD would tell India to f*ck off asap.

AL are very secure now as BNP has been pretty much wiped out. Hasina will easily win in a free election this year as there is little appetite for the incompetence and corruption of BNP.

I encourage any kind of bilateral economic & political cooperation . Keep it up guys

BNP may or may not be gone. It will be known if there is a free and fair election under neutral CTG.

Election has to be fair where all parties given equal opportunities to go to the masses. Let’s people make that decision.

The way Awami wishing to win next term is to place a leash on BNP while running the race. Begun Zia being in jail part of this plan. There has been reports that claimed she was given about 100 seats if she agrees to contest under Hasina and be ready to sit as opposition leader. She refused and choose to go to Jail instead.

Awami League can be gold medal in corruption. It’s awami League who looted from share market and banks, not BNP.

Again, let there be free and fair election, and let the people of Bd make the ultimate decision.

And you want BNP to come in and ruin all the economic achievements under AL?
What did BNP do to economy and military last time they were in power?

Hate AL but do not wish for even greater misery for BD.

PS - BD is not ready for democracy yet. Look at how many countries have ever industrialised under democracy.
You will see the answer is a zero.

Again, it’s not me or you to decide who is right for the job. It’s those people live in Bd will decide. Democratic system is best to accommodate the masses, not atrocitic regime.

If you want Bd to prosper and you want to see Bd a strong nation then you would want to see Bd people united behind the party in power. Division will weaken the nation from in and out my friend.

Look what happened to Lebiya. It’s was one of the prospours nation in Africa but it was missing democracy. End result is not pretty. I do not wish to see same or similar situation erupt in Bd. Would you?
