Defence spending causes poverty in India A Zillion reasons to escape from India

October 17, 2009 by Cyber Gandhi

According to the Global Peace Index, some $2.4 trillion (£1.5tr), or 4.4%, of the global economy “is dependent on violence”. The world spends around $1,000 billion annually on the military. In 2008, world military expenditure reached 1.46 trillion dollars, representing 2.4 percent of world gross domestic product (GDP). At least two million children die every year on account of violence in the world while nearly 40 million suffer disabilities (UNICEF Report).

As chronic hunger and food security issues now affect one-sixth of the world’s population, a third of them live in India. The number of hungry have increased globally about 100 million people this year. World Food Program is the largest UN humanitarian agency committed to fighting global hunger. Unfortunately, WFP received only $2.9 billion, which is one third their target. Inadequate funding of WFP would lead to devastating consequences for the hungry poor. WFP’s proposed budget in India is US$17.8 million to cover direct operational costs for the food needs of 961,500 beneficiaries for five year (2008-2012). WFP is also seeking an additional funding of US$33.8 million for an estimated 2 million beneficiaries in India.

According to Forbes, there are 224 individual families in the world who have personal fortunes of $2.9 billion or more . Savitri Jindal, India’s richest woman have a wealth of $2.9 billion

“The world is over-armed and peace is under-funded,” says UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Three developing nations with poor human rights record were listed among the top 10 biggest military spenders in 2008 : China($ 84.9 Billion), Saudi Arabia ( $ 38.2 Billion) & India ( $ 30.0 Billion)

According to WFP, nearly 50 percent of the world’s hungry live in India, a low-income, food-deficit country with ‘extremely low’ nutritional and health indicators. However, 35 per cent of India’s population – 350 million people – are malnourished and do not know where their next meal will come from.

On July 6, 2009, the Indian government announced its annual budget of approximately $ 210 billion in which $ 29.39 are kept for defence spending . There was 34% increase in India’s defence budget for the year 2009-2010. Comparing to China and Saudi Arabia, India have better human rights record and open democratic institutions, but we are home to around half of the world’s hungry.

“If we consider the budget allocations in India for the year 2008-09, allocation for defence was Rs 105,600 crore which is 14.06% of total budget and around Rs 48,007 crore i.e. 45.5% of the defence budget is spent on arms and ammunitions.” Binalakshmi Nepram, Secretary General of Control Arms Foundation of India (CAFI). If 40 % of the amount which we use to buy weapons of mass destruction is used for socio-economic uplift of our impoverished population, India can expect a qualitative change in the life-style of our citizens.

According to World Hunger Index , Twelve of the 17 Indian states fall into the “alarming” category, and one—Madhya Pradesh—falls into the “extremely alarming” category’.

Unfortunately, Indian security regime is on shopping spree by ignoring the wishes of displaced dalits and other poor people of this country. In August 2009, India announced a separate 10 billion-dollar homeland security upgrade to be completed before 2016. The Indian military has floated global tenders for more than 800 bulletproof vehicles, which may cost 5.7 million-dollar alone. 150 arms firms from 15 countries participated in India’s first homeland security fair in New Delhi. A five day extravaganza, Aero India 2009, at the Yelahanka Air Force Base in Bangalore has attracted around 600 Indian and international companies from 25 countries for the exhibition.

India, incidentally, has bought military hardware and software from Israel worth over $7 billion since the 1991 Kargil conflict. Israeli Military Industries (IMI) recently signed a deal to build five factories in India to produce ordnance and ammunition. IMI make most of the small arms and ammunition for the Indian military. New Delhi’s fascination to military power grows bigger as the deals generate millions of kick backs. The Indian defence budget has allocated $ 4.4 billion for pensions during 2009-2010 alone.

Government of India blacklisted seven foreign companies due to bribery allegations. Sudipta Ghosh, the former head of the Ordnance Factories Board, India was suspended. Israel Aerospace Industries & Rafael were not blacklisted despite being named in a kickbacks scandal due to complexity of the existing deals. Israeli weapons industry employs 40,000 people and it was ranked as the fourth largest exporter of weapons in 2007 . 66 % of all weapons and weapons components manufactured in Israel are exported.

In 2005, Business Week reported that India became Israel’s largest importer of weapons, accounting for about half of the $3.6 billion worth of weapons exported by the Jewish state.

the regime in new delhi is spending huge to protect itself, never for the people of india.

let me give you guys a very quick example, let's just look at the roads, the roads used for national day parade in different countries:

First we have india showing off its not-yet-ready Agni missile, the road is crap, it is hard to believe this is the capital of india. however such crap roads do reflect the overall issue in india -- people are suffering from poverty while the army and the regime are laughing.

have a look at the Chinese parade, the road is much better, the missiles has been in service for almost two decades. why there is such a huge difference? because the CCP is different from those stupid indian parties which only seek short term interests.

:disagree:

Both India and China are poor country. But in a world of blind people, the one that has one eye wins. In this case, its well known that China is a little more advanced and well off. Though is tasteless and demeaning for some Chinese poster to talk about how poor and backward is India, its just preposterous for the Indians to say the same about China. I think you guys should just back off each other.

1. Before responding to the post I just clicked to see the source for the article & frankly wasnt very surprised on finding that it is :

a. A blog

b. By the name of : A Zillion reasons to escape from India

c. All the posts are compelling reasons to escape from india according to the author.

2. Now comes the part where we can discuss the quality of the post :

For starters the author mentions:

"India, incidentally, has bought military hardware and software from Israel worth over $7 billion since the 1991 Kargil conflict."

Well a person will a minimal knowledge of India will know that Kargil conflict occured in 1999 and not 1991. Maybe a typo maybe not.

Next:

"According to World Hunger Index , Twelve of the 17 Indian states fall into the “alarming” category, and one—Madhya Pradesh—falls into the “extremely alarming” category’"

India doesnt have 17 states. This surely its a typo as the number of states is much more than this.

And the most contencious & laughable part:

Unfortunately, Indian security regime is on shopping spree by ignoring the wishes of displaced dalits and other poor people of this country.

How is being a dalit related to being poor & hungry and Since when did these live in a ghetto or something for them to be displaced? Utter lies if i may say so.

The article takes a 90 degrees turn from here on and starts describing the Indo-Israeli military alliance which is out of context , doesnt address any problems or provides solution. I think its just there so that some people despise Jews more ( As the author has specifically mentioned Jewish state even when it wasnt necessary)

So much for the authenticity and the motive of the author.

3.

Any person who has a bit of knowledge of economics will know that in budget the government spending should be allocated properly to all the sectors. Not only does this result in multiplier effect , this division/allocation is governed by principal of diminishing returns. Also poverty is not something that can be ridden by government alone. It depends from individual to individual. I am confident that in India an individual who wants to work has ample oppurtunities to grow and succeed. The govt provides the basic framework in which he/she can nurture and IMO that is what should be the job of a govt.

India spends a very meagre amount on defense ( the world's economy spends 4.4% while India only 2.5 %) and in no certain terms is this expenditure resulting in poverty or any other ailments that my friend is trying to contest.

4.

Its strange when people from other nations who havent been in India as much as the Indians try to put across their point without sound logic. Its ever funnier when checks the thread and finds a fewer Indian responses to the post then the others. I think maybe we Indians are mature enough to know that posts like these are to laugh ,enjoy and rant about while one fetches coffee from a vending machine.

Thank you for demonstrating to everyone here how to put forth a mature response and to the topic.

The people who want to spend money on defence are the high cast folks who has no care for the well being of the majority of the Indian population. Its sad but when the wealthy spend money on defence at the expense of the majority of the poor, its the poor that suffer the most. India really need to get its population under control the break the trend of chronic poverty. The India leader who can do that is the true hero.

Wait, did you just missed the point Asim just made!!!!

Ranting without a purpose/crediable link is no,no,no in this forum. We all know how India is making a big mistake in it's own decision making, but please prove with some credible source, it does require some hard work,,,,,like reading other sources, you know that is important also. Anyways, I know who to not to respond again!!!!

India lives in an unstable neighborhood, there are no stable and democratic Indian neighbors. India's defense spending is not a luxury but a necessity and as stated above India spends just 2.5% where as others spend 4.5% thus India is doing a commendable job and as stated above as well different sectors are allocated resources independently and it's not India is diverting funds that are for human development to defense spending

.
Dude this thread is about indian defense vs indian poverty
.Not CHINESE POVERTY.And dude u can make another thread about it.
3)If chinese govt is lieing to its people about poverty then how come the people who are suffering dont know about it???
