ان سے آخری گفتگو چند دن قبل ہوئی۔ سپریم کورٹ کے فیصلے پر بہت ہی پریشان تھے۔ وہ جنھیں اللہ نے بصیرت عطا کی ہے وہ اس فیصلے کے دوررس اثرات سے آگاہ ہیں۔ انھیں اندازہ ہے کہ جسٹس منیر کی 1954 کی رپورٹ کے بعد یہ دوسری دفعہ ہے کہ برصغیر پاک و ہند کے مسلمانوں کی قربانی سے جنم لینے والی اس مملکت کے بنیادی تصورکو ایک آئینی ترمیم کی ٹھوکر پر لا کر رکھ دیا گیا ہے۔ مولانا شبیر احمد عثمانی سے لے کر مولانا ابو الاعلیٰ مودودی تک سیکڑوں علماء جو یہ تصور کیے بیٹھے تھے کہ آئین پاکستان کی مقدس کتاب میں قرار داد مقاصد تحریر کرنے سے یہ ملک مستقل طور پر اللہ کی بادشاہت قبول کرلے گا۔ ان کی زندگیوں میں ہی اس جمہوری نظام نے اپنی شعبدہ بازیاں دکھانا شروع کر دی تھیں۔ حیرت ہے جس نظام کا تصورہی عوام کی بادشاہی پر رکھا گیا ہو، وہ اللہ کی بادشاہی سے ٹکرائے گا نہیں۔ عوام کی بادشاہی تو ایک ایسا فریب ہے جس میں دنیا کے ہر جمہوری ملک کے عوام کو مبتلا رکھا گیا ہے۔

کارپوریٹ سرمائے سے جنم لینے والی سیاسی پارٹیاں اور اسی سرمائے سے پیدا ہونے والی میڈیا کی چکا چوند کے درمیان پندرہ بیس روز میلے میں ڈالے جانے ووٹوں کی حد تک عوام کو یہ خوش فہمی ہوتی ہے کہ ان کی رائے سے یہ عوام کی بادشاہت قائم ہوتی ہے۔ اس کے بعد عوام کی یہ بادشاہت چار پانچ سو کے ایوان میں جمہوری طور پر وہی فیصلے کرتی ہے جو ان کے وہ آقا کہتے ہیں جنہوں نے ان کی سیاست میں سرمایہ لگایا ہوتا ہے۔ اگر کسی بھی سیاسی جماعت کو جو اللہ کے دین کے غلبے کی جدوجہد میں مصروف عمل ہے۔ یہ غلط فہمی ہے کہ جمہوری نظام کی یہ پٹڑی اس لیے بچھائی گئی ہے کہ اس پر چڑھ کر ایک دن اسلامی نظام کی ٹرین منزل مقصود پر پہنچ سکتی ہے تو ایسی غلط فہمی دماغ سے نکال دینی چاہیے۔

جنہوں نے یہ عوام کی بادشاہت کے فریب کے نام پر یہ جمہوری پٹڑی بچھائی ہے وہ یہ ساری پٹڑی تباہ کر دیتے ہیں لیکن اس پر سوار ہو کر ایسی حکومت کبھی قائم نہیں ہونے دیتے جو اللہ کی حاکمیت کو نافذ کرے۔ الجزائر اور مصر اس کی جیتی جاگتی مثالیں ہیں۔ یہ گفتگو کا لب لباب تھا۔ وہ رات اس موضوع پر کسی ٹیلی ویژن چینل پر طویل انٹرویو دے چکے تھے اور میں ایک کالم تحریر کر چکا تھا۔ گفتگو نے طول پکڑا تو کہنے لگے مری جا رہا ہوں‘ وہاں میرے پاس ایک گھر ہے‘ وہیں چلے آؤ‘ بیٹھ کر بات کرتے ہیں۔کوئی لائحہ عمل طے کرتے ہیں۔ وہ مری چلے گئے اور میں لاہور آ گیا اور پھر یہیں پر یہ خبر ملی کہ وہ انتقال کر گئے۔

نسیم انور بیگ صاحب کی پر رونق اور ایمان افروز میز پر ان سے پہلی ملاقات ہوئی تھی۔کچھ عرصہ پہلے وہ فوج سے ریٹائر ہوئے تھے۔ پورا ملک گزشتہ پندرہ سالوں سے افغان جہاد کا گواہ تھا اور اب روس کے جانے کے بعد وہاں پر عالمی طاقتوں کی رسہ کشی دیکھ رہا تھا۔ آئی جے آئی بن چکی تھی اور نواز شریف برسراقتدار آ چکے تھے۔ جنرل حمید گل جن کا نام اس وقت تک ایک افسانوی کردار کی چاشنی لیے ہوئے زبان زدعام تھا۔ وہ خواب دکھاتا ہے۔ قرون اولیٰ کی باتیں کرتا ہے۔ ایک سوچ رکھتا ہے‘ قیادت فراہم کر سکتا ہے۔ ایسا سوچنے والے بھی بہت تھے اور یہ کہہ کر انھیں مسترد کرنے والے بھی کافی کہ وہ ایک جہادی ہے‘ جرنیل ہے‘ فوج ہی کا دوسرا چہرہ ہے۔ ایسے کردار اپنے اندر بلا کی کشش رکھتے ہیں۔ ایسے کرداروں کے مداح ان پر جان چھڑکنے والے ہوتے ہیں اور ان کے مخالف ان کی موت کے آرزو مند۔ چرچل جب اپنی مقبولیت کے عروج پر تھا تو جنگ عظیم دوم کی فتح کے بعد ایک دفعہ پیرس کے بازار میں گھوم رہا تھا۔

ایک خاتون نے اس کا گریبان تھاما اور کہا ’’اگر تم میرے خاوند ہوتے تو میں تمہاری کافی میں زہر ملا دیتی‘‘۔ چرچل مسکرایا اور اس نے کہا ’’اگر تم میری بیوی ہوتی تو میں وہ کافی بخوشی پی لیتا‘‘۔ ایسی ہی بذلہ سنجی اور حاضر جوابی جنرل حمید گل کا بھی خاصہ تھی اور شاید یہ ہر ایسے کردار کا خاصہ ہوتی ہے جسے محبت کے پھول اور نفرت کے پتھر بیک وقت ملے ہوں۔ یوسف زئی پختون قبیلے کا فرد جس کے آباؤ اجداد سرگودھا میں آ کر آباد ہو گئے۔ تمتماتا ہوا چہرہ اور آنکھوں میں حیاء اور شرم کی خیرہ کر دینے والی چمک۔شخصیت کا رعب ایسا کہ محفل میں کسی کو لغو یا فضول بات کرنے کی ہمت نہ ہوتی۔ وہ آتے تو نسیم انور بیگ صاحب ہمہ تن گوش ہو جاتے۔ یوں تو میز پر موجود ہر کوئی انھیں اس لیے سننا چاہتا تھا کہ ان کے پاس تازہ خبر ہو گی لیکن وہ تو خود نسیم انور بیگ کے پاس آتے کہ خبر تو وہ ہے جس کا فیصلہ قضا و قدر کے کارپردازان کرتے ہیں۔ وہ خواب ایسے دیکھتے جس کی تعبیر کی تکمیل کا راستہ موجود ہو۔ وہ اس راستے کا تعین بھی کرتے اور ایک جرنیل کی طرح اس پر چلنے‘ دشمن سے ہوشیار رہنے اور وقت پر وار کرنے کی پوری حکمت عملی وضع کرتے۔

دنیا میں تاریخ سے زیادہ متعصب اور گمراہ کن مضمون کوئی نہیں۔ تعصب کے ضمیر میں گندھا ہوا اس کا آٹا بدبودار اور متعفن زدہ ہے۔ دو یا تین ہزار سال تو دور کی بات ہے آج ہم کسی شخصت یا واقعہ کی تاریخ لکھنا چاہیں تو ہمارے تعصبات ہمیں سچ نہیں لکھنے دیتے۔ کیا ہم آج ضیاء الحق کے بارے میں سچ لکھ اور بول سکتے ہیں۔ وہ جنھیں اس نے اقتدار کی مسند بٹھایا اور وہ آج بھی بیٹھے ہوئے ہیں‘ ان کی بھی زبانیں گنگ ہیں۔ کیا اسامہ بن لادن اور ملا محمد عمر جیسے کرداروں کے بارے میں کبھی سچ بولا جائے گا۔ شاید نہیں اور خصوصاً اس کارپوریٹ سرمائے سے قائم میڈیا اور جمہوری نظام میں تو اس کا تصور بھی نہیں کیا جا سکتا۔ جنرل حمید گل کی شخصیت بھی ایسی ہی ایک شخصیت ہے کہ جس پر بات کرنے والے سیکولر عینک کے تعصب اور جمہوری فریب زدگی کے قلم سے مسلح ہیں لیکن اس مملکت خداداد پاکستان سے محبت اور اس کے مستقبل سے امید گل صاحب کی شخصیت کا ہی خاصہ تھی۔

ان پر تنقید کرنے والے سیاست دان یا ان کے پروردہ وہ ہیں جن پر اس ملک میں اقتدار کے دروازے بند ہوں تو کوئی بھارت کے ٹینکوں پر چڑھ کر آنے کی خواہش رکھتا ہے تو کوئی امریکا اور سعودی عرب کے اثرورسوخ کی چھتری تلے اس ملک پر قابض ہونا چاہتا ہے۔ حمید گل صاحب کا ضمیر ہی اس وطن سے محبت میں گندھا ہوا تھا۔ 92ء ہجری میں امام نفس زکیہ کے صاحبزادے عبداللہ شاہ غازی جس جہاد ہند کی بشارتیں اپنے نانا سید الانبیاء ﷺ کے حوالے سے سنتے آئے تھے اور اس کی امید پر کراچی کے ساحلوں پر آ کر آباد ہو گئے تھے‘ جنرل حمید گل اسی سلسلے کی ایک کڑی تھے۔ افغان جہاد کا کونسا ایسا سپاہی ہے جو ان کا نام احترام سے نہ لیتا ہو‘ افغان جہاد کے بارے میں ان کا ایک موقف تاریخ کی اتنی بڑی سچائی ہے کہ اگر کبھی کسی نے پاکستان کی تاریخ تعصب کی عینک اتارکر لکھی تو وہ حمید گل صاحب کے اس موقف پر مہر تصدیق ثبت کرے گا کہ ’’افغانوں نے چودہ سال قربانی دے کر پاکستان کے بقا اور تحفظ کی جنگ لڑی‘‘۔ جن عظیم دانش وروں اور کافی کے تلخ گھونٹ اور مشروب مغرب کے اثر میں لکھنے والوں کو اس بات کا اندازہ نہیں وہ صرف ایک بار تاجکستان‘ ازبکستان‘ کرغستان‘ کازاکستان‘ ترکمانستان اور آذربائیجان کی مسلمان ریاستوں میں جا کر دیکھ لیں جن پر سوویت یونین نے قبضہ کیا تھا۔

ظلم و بربریت کی کہانیاں تو آپ کو ہر بوڑھا سنائے گا کہ 1917ء کوئی زیادہ دور کی بات نہیں لیکن غربت و افلاس اور بھوک اور بیماری یہ بتانے کے لیے کافی ہے کہ سوویت یونین کے قبضے نے وہاں کیا کچھ کیا۔ دوشنبے جیسے شہر میں صرف دو سڑکیں شہری سہولیات رکھتی‘ باقی شہر میں عورتیں آج بھی ربڑ کے مشکیزے اٹھائے پانی بھر کر لاتی ہیں۔ بڑے بڑے ثقافتی مرکز اور غربت و افلاس میں ڈوبے ہوئے شہر اور دیہات۔ ان لوگوں کی نسل کشی جنھیں دین کا تھوڑا سا بھی علم حاصل تھا۔ پچھتر سال تک مسجدوں پر تالے‘ کئی ایک کو گوداموں میں بدل دیا گیا۔ لوگ تہہ خانوں میں چھپ کر قرآن کی تعلیم بچوں کو دیتے۔ دسمبر 1979ء میں جب روس افغانستان میں داخل ہوا تو پاکستان کے تمام ترقی پسند جو آج امریکا کی جھولی میں بیٹھے ہیں‘ اس وقت روس کے خوشہ چین تھے۔ مسکراتے ہوئے طنز کرتے تھے کہ وہ دیکھو تمہارے دروازے تک آ گیا‘ اب ڈیورنڈ لائن عبور کرے گا اور تم لوگ داڑھیاں منڈوا کر اپنی شناخت چھپاتے پھرو گے۔ کوئی عبدالرحمن سے رحمانوف بن جائے گا اور کوئی نذیر سے نذیروف۔ سرخ سویرا طلوع ہونے والا ہے۔

بیس لاکھ افغان اپنی جانوں کی قربانی نہ دیتے۔ افغانستان کو سوویت یونین کا قبرستان نہ بناتے تو نہ حمید گل کی آئی ایس آئی ہوتی اور نہ ہی نواز شریف کی مسلم لیگ‘ نہ الطاف بھائی کی گونج ہوتی اور نہ مولانا فضل الرحمن کاجبہ و دستار۔ جس کو حمید گل کی اس سچائی پر یقین نہیں‘ وہ ایک دفعہ وسط ایشیائی مسلمان ریاستوں کا دورہ کرکے دیکھ لے۔ ایسا سچ بولنے والا ٓج ہم میں نہیں رہا‘ لیکن میرا ایمان ہے کہ جس راستے کے وہ راہی تھے‘ ان کا استقبال اس راستے پر گامزن ارواح نے کیا ہو گا جو رسول اللہ ﷺ کی اس بشارت کی امین تھیں۔ ’’دو لشکروں پر جہنم کی آگ حرام‘ ایک وہ جو عیسیٰ ابن مریم کے ساتھ ہو گا اور دوسرا وہ جو جہاد ہند میں حصہ لے گا‘‘۔

A picture is better than a thousand words. He was no woman basher like you are implying the fact is despite being an EX ISI Chief and a decorated three star Gen he actively kept himself engaged in the causes he believed in and on top of that list was the Kashmir . And he performed well at various fronts and was a respected name in international military analysis circles.

You can't just blame him for all the ills of Taliban that was the natural outcome of the mess in Kabul after 89.

The only place where I feel he should have done better was while he was retiring in 89 he should have made a well laid down procedure on how to dismantle the Mujaihidin network in Pakistan but IMO opinion after success in Kabul Pakistani establishment wanted to use the same launching grounds for attacks in Kashmir but you cant blame gul for that as I said earlier that must have been a collective decision and if this danger coupled with millions of Afghanis was not even assessed at that time then for that neglect every body is responsible including top civil and military brass. They should have thought india will use the same ideology against us something she did successfully later.

But I don't see in all this how you can blame General for everything and even any atrocities committed against women across the border. I have seen him very respectful to women in real life so I guess its little time for you to do some deeper research and some soul searching as well.

why would we work with USSR (now Russia) when they were primary arms and diplomatic supporters of our enemy - india?

at that particular time in history and in that historical context it wouldnt have made an iota of sense...they were also backing communist/leftist groups in Pakistan such as Al-Zulfiqar

I am inclined to state a very simple and established fact in this world strategic decisions are made on natioanl interests and foreign policy is changed accordingly if you know history it is Pakistan actually who ditched Russians first in 1949 when our Pm went to US instead of Russia and then again more boldly in late 50's by allowing USAF airforce to use Peshawar air station from where they were sending reconnaissance and covert surveillance flights of U-2 one of which was downed by Russians and Pilot captured alive so their support for india was natural .

But Bhutto's efforts saw a positive rise in relations and steel mill is the proof telling us had we employed proper diplomatic relations with Russia it was better for us . Operation fair play by CIA proves my point US couldn't digest the fact that Pakistan is opting a more sovereign and self centered approach and they eliminated Bhutto. Had Bhutto being in power in 79 he would have asked his general to first make him talk to kremlin before deciding any strategy .

But to understand how awkward and tactical things may evolve into when you are in the eye of a storm read this.

Helped by ISI, the Mossad channeled Soviet reversed engineered weapons to Afghanistan. In Charlie Wilson's own word, Zia reported to have remarked to Israeli intelligence service: "Just don't put any stars of David on the boxes.

Unfortunately we never had a leader when he was actually in a leading state and if ever anybody tries to steer Pakistan away from chaos onto a path of self reliance and prosperity he was eliminated.

What did he do exactly? Training Afghan mujahidin? Didn't that policy backfire at the end for Pakistan?

Someone please explain why he is popular and what he has done for Pakistan that has made it a "better" country.

he saved pakistan from soviets....

Strongly suspect that General Hameed Gul was poisoned by Black Water/CIA because he was mediating between the Taliban factions for peace. The Americans know that the Islamic and nationalistic resistance to their colonial plans for AFPak has deep roots in the hearts of the people of the region. Hameed Gul gave words to that feeling in such a way that both the military men and the civilians felt in their hearts and minds that everything he said was true. He was a brave man who despite of being retired from the army rose to the occasion and faced the intellectual and moral challenges facing his beloved country and institution after 911. Islam and Pakistan was his battle cry which resounded well with the emotions and intellect of the people.

It seems that the Americans consider Islam as a many headed Hydra and are cutting off the heads one by one. It hasn't been long when the news of the death of Mullah Umar was leaked by the Indians and Americans and thus sabotaged the peace process being brokered by Pakistan. General Gull was trying to quickly end the inter faction fighting in Afghanistan among the Taliban and was thus a threat to foreign interests wanting permanent chaos in AfPak.

The Americans have ended the financial support to Pakistan for pursuing their War from this year and want to leave behind a Cambodia like situation with their death squads running around creating terror and killing influential opinion makers like General Hameed Gul Shaheed.

JUD has never been involved in sectarian terrorism also not HEM. as for Hameed Gul he was a true patriot and real soldier of ALLAH and his beloved RASOOL SAW fought for Pakistan till end. May ALLAH forgive him and award him with Shifat of RASOOL SAW

Hafiz Saeed and Hafiz Salahuddin and Samiul Haq along with General (R) Ashfaq Pervain Kiyani and many others also attended funeral of Lt General Hameed Gul.

It is a strange coincidence that a proposal on the lines of "Tipu Sultan and Investiture" was sent to General Hameed Gull Shaheed on 2 P.M on the day he died.

"To gain recognition and increase his prestige in India against his neighboring rivals, as well as the devious British Colonists Tipu Sultan tried to get Investiture or recognition from the Ottoman Caliph. He also developed diplomatic relations with the French.

Previously, too among the Delhi Sultans, Iltutmish and Mahmood Ghaznavi had got Investiture from the Baghdad Abbaside Calpihs. Similarly, Feroz Shah Tughlaq and Muhammad bin Tughlaq got it from the Caliphs in Egypt.

Islamic Law calls for a unitary state under the Caliph. but reality dictated the as the Caliph could not control distant lands or became weak, so he recognized the Muslim rulers who in turn paid him yearly tribute.

The present disputes between Muslim entities i.e. The Afghan Taliban and the Islamic State can be solved with this legal precedent. This will help in bringing quick peace to Afghanistan, and bring the country out of decades of war which have its effects on the peace in Pakistan as well. This will also control the spread of the IS as regional entities will pay symbolic homage to it."

Couple of years ago, at the Islamabad Airport Departure lounge. Not under any official capacity.

Yes he was quite fit for his age.

Although I spoke to him over the phone to greet him on Eid, I had met him in Nov last at RWP. He looked fighting fit then.
