Decrease in Average Height of Adults in India Alarming: Study

yeah I know that's why I said next best thing - which is the height of fathers by their ethnicity

like I said no true height calculation was ever conducted (reason for me pointing towards a diaspora group) that was my estimate seeing the older generation
regular people in my experience in cities were 5'7-5'8 and people in rural areas taller than that

so it was an estimate because no reliable data ever came out of Pak (if someone has access to it hook me up)

"According to the United States Army official site for recruiting, the height range for new recruits starts at 5’0 and ends at 6’8 for men and 4’10 to 6’8 for women. This is the range specified on the Army official site that displays its height and weight calculator. The minimum age for these requirements is 17."

you cant judge heights like this
I shared this recent paper

It turns out that Indians are so short. This is not even as tall as the shortest Guangxi people in China.
But there are some Indian doctors in Zhuzhou hospital. They are about the same height as Chinese people.
Is there a big difference in the height of Indians of different nationalities?

Yes there is. This is apparent in both different ethnicities as well as rich/poor divide in each ethnicity.

India has a huge rich/poor divide and class/caste system contributes to that. Rich people in India are relatively better fed, fairer, taller and live in much better environments. Poor people are screwed in India, they have nothing and on top of it, they also look scrawny, short and malnourished.

Indian average HDI level in maternal and baby related (neonatal) HDI factors are much worse than in Bangladesh because no one cares about poor people in India generally, or their well-being.

This is more observable and prevalent in poorer undeveloped states like Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Orissa (Odisha). Conditions in these poorer states are so bad (some have compared these places to sub-saharan Africa in poverty levels), that they drag Indian average down for neonatal health indicators and averages. Indian Urban centers and the four largest cities usually have far better healthcare and transportation facilities, but only for upper class/caste folks, who live far better than their poorer cousins, even in cities.

The poor in India have no planned spending on them by the govt., they end up living in slums, drinking dirty water and generally having a far lower quality of life. Rich Indians are pretty selfish that way, they think it is their birth-right to exploit their own poor - they feel absolutely no shame about it. In this respect, the attitude in Bangladesh is very different - we have many, many poverty alleviation initiatives and there are many NGO's working to lift people out of poverty and improving their quality of life in various ways.

Talking about ethnicities, North Indians from Punjab (Sikh folks and especially the upper class Sikhs) are on avg. much taller than Eastern or South Indian folks. If you are lucky enough to be born in an upper class Indian family, you will naturally be taller and fairer, because you will be well-fed from childhood and don't have to work out in the hot sun. Poorer Indian kids are fed non-nutritious bare-subsistence meals and are subject to stunting from an early age.

Overall life expectancy at birth is 73.7 years in Bangladesh, while it is 69.1 years in India (4.6 years lower on avg. and 5 years lower for females)
Birth rate, fertility or the average number of children born to each woman is 2.15 per woman in Bangladesh while it is 2.4 per woman in India.
According to MOSPI, in India, the adult (15+ years) literacy rate is 69.3%, whereas Bangladesh’s literacy rate for 2019 was 74.68% on avg.
.

In India there is income inequality that is the major factor behind stunted height. But that is also not the entire picture. Families giving preference to first born and to male childs all contributes to it, not to mention the genetic lottery. As my example my father who is 6th born in a time when family was not well to do, is shorter than me by maybe 3 inches where I'm the average 5'8 city height, thanks to being just second of two being born in relative middle class comfort. But if you see my first, second born uncles they are all 5'10+.

^These were really good height 100 years ago, but that was before the turmoil of 19th century in the North East region, and the decades of abject hardship thus followed.

My grandpa and people from my gramp's generation are all near 6ft approx, they belonged to the generation born before union with India, but there has been a decline in the generation born in the period of turmoil and hardship felt after the union of India ,only by the generation in late 90s and post-2000s,what has been lost is somewhat recovered, but it will take many more generations to fully recover from the stunting incurred by the long period of hardship in the region.

Thank you bro, actually my mother and younger sister have been to China, end of 2019, just before the pandemic. They went to Beijing, Great Wall, and others. I just hear their description after they get home...:D
What were their impressions?

I liked it very much when he compared Hindu Family with a Muslim family :D

Yeah seems trends can be seen in the religious angle. No group can be really said to be in a good position though sadly.
Where exactly did he talk about religios divide in height?

I don't think it has anything to do with height - lots of Hindus also eat meat and it's not like Muslims are mongols or something

Most of Thier dietary habits are similar to Thier region, add in that meat is kinda expensive

I don't think it should make a big difference tbh

It starts from 7:50, he mainly mentions the trend is because Hindu families give more attention to boy child/first child than girl child/2nd/3rd child and having a slightly better average expenditure per person. It's a generalization I agree very much.
The religious trend is more about economic and social factors, which can vary hugely from place to place than any sweeping generalization just due to religion.

What were their impressions?

Positive: China is very developed
Negative: The toilet is not as clean as in Indonesia. They need to find mosque to get better toilet during trip outside their hotel.

As we know, Muslim like to use water to clean their sensitive body part in toilet. We dont like to use toilet paper. Water is also very useful to clean some part in the toilet, so we dont like dry floor toilet.

Yeah the one thing I hate most about visiting China are the squat toilets abd the fact that many of the public bathrooms can be dirty. Although this has improved a lot since maybe 10 to 15 years ago.

You had go to some scenic spot. There are tens of thousands of tourists in scenic spots such as the Great Wall every day. It's hard to keep the toilet basically clean.
You should look at the public toilet next to the street. That's fair.

Well last time I went to China was four years ago. There are areas where the restrooms were very nice even though I still hate squat toilets even if they are clean. In places like the train station or older buildings, the toilets are pretty disgusting sometimes and they stink.

To be fair though China has improved a lot. While in the US, I feel like the public toilets are getting filthier than they were before and in some big cities, they are becoming quite disgusting. But overall the US is still a lot better when it comes to overall toilet cleanliness and no squat toilets thank god.
