QUETTA: Death toll in Sunday's suicide attack in Quetta has reached eight as one of the injured succumbed to his wounds at the Combined Military Hospital Quetta on Monday, officials said.

According to a Balochistan government spokesman, eight people were killed and 97 injured in the suicide blast targeting the convoy of Inspector General Police Mushtaq Ahmed Sukhera.

The suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into the convoy of the police chief when he was about to reach his residence.

"As IG Police entered his residence, the suicide bomber struck the convoy", Syed Ahmed Mobeen told Dawn.com. He said four policemen and a child were also among those killed.

Mobeen said more than 1,000 kilograms of explosives were used in the blast. Most of the injured were civilians who were passing from the area or were sitting in nearby houses when the bomber rammed his explosives-laden vehicle in police chief's convoy.

All 97 injured were shifted to CMH Quetta for medical treatment as there was lack of medical facilities in the government-run Civil Hospital and the Bolan Complex Hospital.

The blast damaged glasses and windowpanes of buildings and houses located quite far away from the site of blast.

Caretaker Chief Minister Balochistan Nawab Ghous Bakhsh Baroozai visited the site of the explosion and said all official resources would be used to rein in terrorists.

. . .
On May 11, Pakistanis saw historical elections and the next day the terrorists tried to kill the Police Chief of Baluchistan province in a terrorist attack that killed eight innocent people including a child and injured over 97 people. In this tragedy, the encouraging sign was the huge voter turnout despite terrorist warnings and threats. This was a clear victory of the peace loving people of Pakistan who showed with their voting that they reject the terrorists and their ideologies. In a statement, our President Barak Obama said to the Pakistani people, “By conducting competitive campaigns, freely exercising your democratic rights, and persevering despite intimidation by violent extremists, you have affirmed a commitment to democratic rule that will be critical to achieving peace and prosperity for all Pakistanis for years to come”.

We stand by the Pakistani people and hope that this new government will do all to stop the wave of violence that has plagued Pakistan.
