Dear Pakistan members and PDF team....beware of Ammonium Nitrate

Few years ago Pakistan and USA were working on non explosive urea what happened to it??
Urea is not an explosive itself until mixed with ----------- and then processed a little.

Not the case sir,
Hot humid weather makes it very explosive and due to its worldwide cheap agricultural use no one raise concern but it is time now....we must stop stockpiling it.....

We must stop....

There is no cheap alternative. In rural areas cow dung is used often as a replacement but that is not viable for large scale farming. You need Urea to replenish the soil.

WASHINGTON, Feb 28: A Pakistani firm has invented a new formula to make fertilisers that cannot be converted into bomb-making materials, diplomatic sources told Dawn.

The firm, Fatima Group, has succeeded in making non-lethal alternatives to ammonium nitrate, a key ingredient in the fertilisers it makes. Fertilisers with ammonium nitrate, however, can easily be converted into bomb-making ingredients.

“Such a long-term solution would be a true scientific breakthrough,” Lt-Gen Michael Barbero, the head of the Pentagon’s Joint Improved Explosive Device Defeat Organisation, said in a statement.

A US television network, CNN, reported on Thursday that the United States and Pakistan reached an agreement last week to make fertilisers with non-explosive materials. But diplomatic sources told Dawn that an agreement could only be reached after the new material is tested. The sources said that US experts would soon visit Pakistan for testing the new material with experts from the Fatima Group, Pakistan’s major fertiliser manufacturer.

Representatives of the group visited Washington last week and met senior officials from the Pentagon, the State Department and also some US lawmakers.

There are already lots of alternatives but they either have side effects or cant be produced economically.

Human waste, water from drainage system; after treatment can be used. But question is who is gonna do that?

They tried that in china where toilet waste was transported directly to processing plants via dedicated pipes. In the end project was abandoned bcz human waste has too many bacteria and viruses. The treatment required to remove all virus/Bacteria completely is an expensive venture.

Please check again. Addition of moisture(ambient or artificial) to urea does not make it into an explosive. Read up on Adblue. As a fertilizer Urea is one of the safest and does not need to stop production or stockpiling. Even if directly added to fire, it decomposes at high temperatures but neither burns nor explodes.

Old news, DAWN is late by half a decade approx.

That is actually not true. Urea crystals can decompose over time on their own as it has a shelf life of 6 months max. Urea stored in Beirut warehouse was sitting there for about 7 years.

It was not urea, It was ammonium nitrate.

Apologies i had Urea in mind which i should say is also explosive. Ammonium nitrate although is much more unstable and is not widely used in Pakistan. Pakistan at one time had put a ban on sale of it around 2010 i believe after terrorist started to used it to make pressure cooker or concrete bombs.

No problem. However, let me tell you again Urea is not an explosive and can not be used directly for this purpose. Making an explosive out of urea after some chemical and physical processing is possible but not easy.

Dear Pakistan members and PDF team....beware of Ammonium Nitrate

China Ammonium Nitrate causes massive blast,

Beirut Ammonium Nitrate causes massive damage 100 died so for....

What we are waiting ? We should urge Govt of Pakistan to take care or get rid of Ammonium Nitrate if may we have....We have only port city "operational"...we must push authorities to check if someone stockpiled Ammonium Nitrate kindly store it safe of get rid of it.

If law makers do some positive legislation, relevant authorities adopt pro-active approach to their responsibilities and judiciary dispense such cases with exemplary punishment swiftly - such disasters could be averted.
Here it seems in Lebanon authorities lacks the ability to collect/monitor the data for import/storage/utilising of such dangerous goods.

Our business people have very bad habit of hoarding for the sake of price fluctuation. Should be extreme penalty in such cases.
