Bangladesh Railway (BR) on Sunday signed a Tk 609-crore deal with Indian RITES Ltd to procure 16 broad-gauge locomotives.

As per the agreement, the Indian company will start supplying the locomotives after 18 months from now.

Of the total, India will provide Tk 428 crore while the remaining will be paid by Bangladesh government. Each locomotive will cost Tk 25.57 crore.

The BR is purchasing the engines under the $1 billion dollar line of credit provided by India to Bangladesh for different infrastructural development.

Bangladesh Railway Joint Director General Md Shamsuzzaman and director of RITES Ltd signed the deal at noon at the Railway Bhaban in the capital.

Communications Minister Obaidul Quader, also in-charge of railway ministry, BR Secretary Fazle Kabir and BR Director General Abu Taher were present there.

Earlier on January 31, Bangladesh Railway sealed a Tk 349 crore deal with the same company to procure 10 broad-gauge diesel-electric locomotives in the next eighteen months.

Bangladesh's requirement was meter-gauge locomotives but as India does not produce it we will have to get the broad-gauge locomotives... despite there were some media hype that India was ready to change the condition of the line of credit so that Bangladesh can get locomotives from other sources... all lies and these low quality Indian locomotives will cost Bangladesh more in terms of maintenance...

Thats because Bangladesh government had to cancel equal amount of contracts due to unfavorable terms. This was done just to save face value of both India and Bangladeshi government...
