Deadly blasts rock Afghan city

At least 35 people have been killed after a series of explosions rocked the centre of the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, an interior ministry spokesman has said.

Saturday's attacks also left 45 people, including policemen and civilians, injured.

Al Jazeera's Hoda Abdel-Hamid, reporting from Kabul, the Afghan capital, said: "We spoke to the spokesman of the governor to the city of Kandahar [and] it appears to be a co-ordinated attack.

"One explosion happened near the police headquarters. The second one was heard near the provincial guest house in an area where also President [Hamid] Karzai's half brother [Ahmad Wali Karzai] lives.

"Now he [Wali Karzai] is in Kabul; we did speak to him and he did not have much more information than that.

"The third explosion was apparently heard ... next to Kandahar prison."

High alert

Kandahar hospital was put on full alert and appealed for blood donations.

Talking to the Taliban

Several old buildings near the prison collapsed and there were fears that people may be trapped in the rubble.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the series of attacks.

A statement on the group's website said the attacks were to serve as a "message" to General Stanley McChrystal, the Nato commander, who is planning an
operation in Kandahar against the fighters.

Kandahar is Afghanistan's third biggest city, after Kabul and Herat, and was the spiritual capital of the Taliban, who ruled Afghanistan from 1996 until their overthrow in the 2001 US-led invasion.

Kandahar is the 2nd largest city, not 3rd.

Did you just make that up?

Kandahar — Population: 450,300 Central Statistics Office of Afghanistan (2006)

I am not a reporter, but a poster. I took this report from Al Jazeera. Herat, Balkh and Kandahar has always been close in terms of population and development. But nowdasy Herat has been the leading province in terms of developments and progresss for the last 2 decades in all over the country. Balkh is also following the same path, but unfortunately Qandahar is fuffering badly for the last 9 years because of war.

.
My cousin works in an hospital in Qandahar, I called him and he said the situation was really really bad, and alot of families have suffered badly.

.
RIP the dead...

Near prison. They must be trying to break prison so they can free more thugs who can join them.

I did not ask you which city is going through development. My Pashtun friends from Kandahar showed me constructions pictures of Kandahar and obviously its going through a HUGE makeover. Such as Kandahar Valley, Kandahar University.

Herat politically has no rule or power many dont even know if it exists, Historically speaking, THE MAJORITY of AFGHANISTANs rulers are KANDAHARI including Hamid Karzai. Even those people who ruled Persia,India, modern day Pakistan were Kandahari.
lmao let alone all those rulers being from Kandahar even Nur Jahan was from Kandahar.

In fact, I read an article that said, Kandahar is the NYC of Afghanistan. Kandahar I think was the former capital of Afghanistan and is the de-facto capital presently for Taliban.

According to Yahoo, the population of Kandahar city is nearly 800,000 Now that is a lot more as compared to Herat. Kandahar is where a lot of Afghansitans politics come from.

Even as a Pakistani I know about Kandahar and the role it plays in Afghanistan, Afghanistan is known to have 2 major cities, Kabul and Kandahar.
