DCNS Wins Sub Contract With Pakistan


France – French naval company DCNS won a contract this summer its supply two Subtics combat management systems for Pakistan's Agosta 70 diesel-electric submarine fleet, industry executives said.

DCNS signed in June a contract for modernization of Agosta 70 boats, described as "very old subs," for an Asian country, Alain Cursat, DCNS marketing manager for submarine combat systems, told journalists. Cursat declined to identify the country. But other industry sources said Pakistan was the customer. One industry executive said the prospect of selling new submarines to Pakistan had gone cold as the Navy was modernizing its existing Agosta fleet, while a second executive said Pakistan was the only operator of the Agosta boat in the region.

Pakistan bought the Agosta diesel-electric submarine, built by DCNS, in the mid 1990s and had been looking to add to its fleet with more modern boats.

DCNS had pitched the Marlin, a submarine derived from the Scorpene boat co-developed with Spain, but the Pakistan Navy favored the rival U214 boat from German archrival Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW). The Pakistan Navy has not signed with HDW.

DCNS is expecting other contract wins for the Subtics system, notably among the fleet of U209 boats operated by South American navies, as operators look to implement a midlife upgrade of their conventional (SSK) submarines, Cursat said.

DCNS expects to capture about 10 more modernization contracts for its Subtics system over the next 10 years, he said.

A sale to Pakistan of new submarine technology is a sensitive issue as DCNS sold six Scorpene submarines to India for $3.9 billion in 2005. The boats are being built locally by Mazagon Docks but the program has fallen behind because of technical problems.

Subtics stands for submarine tactical integrated combat system. The system, which integrates sensors and weapons, can be retrofitted on boats of different manufacture, including Russian build, Cursat said.

DCNS last year signed a deal for the supply of four Scorpene type submarines to Brazil, and is helping the Brazilian Navy to design and build the non-nuclear parts of a nuclear powered submarine. The Brazilian submarine deal, including construction of a shipyard and naval base with the local joint venture partner Oderbrecht, is worth 6.7 billion euros, of which four billion goes to DCNS.

shd improve the capability of the agosta 70s but the PN needs new modern boats quickly. unfortunately budget constraints have pushed back the procurement process by at least 3-5 years. so in essence this upgrade is a 'stop-gap' measure.

i hope we are not spending heavily on these boats.
what PN need at this point of time are new modren subs like the U214, Marlin of the chines option.

i hope we can strike a deal as early as possible so that we can start getting these by 2015.

:( NO U214 the project has been slashed. No question of Marlin you cant have anything that just on drawing board.

France will provide combat systems for submarines SUBTICS an "Asian country", we learn only now, without further details on this mysterious operator Agosta "old" (1). The contract was signed last June.
SUBTICS allows, among other things, to draw a salvo of missiles, SM-39 Exocet, for example, guiding multiple torpedoes, manage comms ... A nugget technology has earned as a result, some cruppers to competition at the point of not only fit, original equipment, the Scorpene, but also, for example, U209 submarines built in Germany and operated in South America .

(1) well-known example, Pakistan, which received 70 and Agosta 90B. The Ushant, the last French Agosta, also finished in the same corner, in Malaysia, which France helped create the sub-marinade, transfer of skills.

We can get new subs later on.Right now first priority should be rebuilding infrastructure.

PN really need some new stuff and espescially when it come's to sbs. We are going for chinese at the moment but who knows whats gonna happen in up comming years? If our economy gets better then PN will for sure get the budget it needs to buy U boats or any other good platform. Lets hope for the best as PN is trying to do all it can for us!

the economy is gonna get worse......and thats why PN is upgrading older agostas because they know its impossible to get new subs rite now!

The two Agosta 70 Submarines, Hashmat and Hurmat, joined the Pakista Navy in 1979 and 1980.

SUBTICS is an advanced combat data system also in use with French Navy. First export application was our A-90Bs and has proved to be a very reliable, high speed data management system in all scenarios. Its inclusion in Agusta 70s will increase their potential many folds. Good move by Pak Navy to use limited resources efficiently.

for how long our navy is keep wasting money on old system almost 90 percent of our naval harware is old other than F 22P and Agosta 90B everything is old helos are very very old and naval aviation is also too old mirage III and P 3 Orion are old what new they have bought nothing just rubbish is our navy
