What's new

DAWN had to cut staff salaries.

.
In Pakistan the inevitabile demise was delayed due to government handouts now the media houses have redo their business models
What pmln used as a punishment for ARY turned out to be a blessing as it is completely unaffected by the media cuts and is now is the number 1 media house in all categories be it entertainment or news

Such support really took off under Bhutto, and was always a mistake since then. The print media must reinvent themselves or die out, it is quite clear.

This should also apply to TV channels. Let the viewership decide their revenues from advertisers.

In Pakistan both are connected the loss on papers is more or less due to their faulty model as a whole falling apart
Some channels took 50 percent of their cash from government ARY was denied of that cash which led them to develop a model that was less dependent on government bribes now they are the only channel thriving and conquering all forms of genres
They own a psl team, their movies make 50 crore plus every year, their dramas conquer the ratings and their anchors are rating kings wait another year they may end up buying certain bankrupt media houses

Wouldnt be a shocker if they end up running Dawn in next 2 years or something

Such free markets work well, if the authorities can resist the temptation to mess with channel allocations and selective application of PEMRA guidelines and incited moral or other imagined outrages. That is difficult in Pakistan.

Such lamenting is typical with the change in patronage that is traditionally associated with changes of government in Pakistan. That is only to be expected in a country ruled by personality cults and not by laws.
