I doubt many of them choose it as a "career" willingly. They probably do it because of whatever situation they're in (likely financial). I am not one to ignore prostitution, but the trade itself is immoral. Prostiution has been the oldest trade in our world and universe. We as a society should discourage such a cheap practice. What good is legalized prostitution when it gives no benefit to our society? Unlike animals, humans are set to be monogamous. We should value our traditions, becuase there is a scientific approach to or socio-behavioural ways.

The problem is that India has chosen the middle path. We have laws that prohibit prostitution, yet no proper policing of these laws. As a result prostitution is driven underground, and all sorts of shady characters get involved. Either put a full stop on prostitution, or legalise and regulate it. The former has small chance of success. We saw that during prohibition period. People will always find a way to bend the system in such cases.

Prostitution is frowned upon almost all societies, including here in UK. But the legalization will bring certain benefits to the society which I already mention before.
It is impossible to stop, impossible to police.
Legalizing it (at least at certain level) will bring it under govt control. Now govt can see it but unable to do anything about it.

In terms of culture, I don't know if India has any left, due to western influences. In regard to the culture legalizing prostitues will give college students or any youth an oppertunity to fornicate with a woman, rather than love her as your wife or soulmate.
