Danger and demons: Yemen's mysterious 'Well of Hell'

Sandy area with some rock formation.. so sinkhole is a possibility... the edges are sharp and the ground surface is flat... so it means a sudden formation. It rules our both sink and volcano.
Sink holes have sharp edges too, but it is gradual at first, however, the last stage looks like that hole.

OK but how to explain the smell ?

My god I remember the cgi looking better than that when I first watched it as a kid. It aged horribly

I think this was one of the better episodes, at least till the time I watched it on BBC TV here in India. The devil was nicely portrayed and the metalwork in the habitation area of the Ood people. Looked real.

I cried when that ood died saving martha :(

My father told me when he was younger the kids in our village would see jinns in the well too when lowered. He explained this was due to gases being released from the earth which would often cause hallucinations.

When we don't know or understand something we seek refuge in the comfort of deamons and jinn. Investigation in this day and age should reveal logical explanation to this natural phenomenon.

Exactly.

Foul odors could be basically sulphur fumes which is very common coming from exposed sediment.

This is essentially a lava tube. If there is CO2 in the depths, better have oxygen gear before descending to any depth.

I remember reading from a Yemeni solider who was stationed there few decades back (when they had a base) the water they pumped out was black in color and foul smell.

Could be some sort of underground activity but as @313ghazi pointed out might as well stick a camera or drone and see what other plants and life form are down there.

The first line was a bouncer. LOL What does it mean ?
Gulzar e hust o bood na deevanawar daikh

Persian mainly.
Hust or hast mean present
Bood mean past
Gulzar mean bed of flowers, but here it will be translated to wonders.

So the explanation will be:
Don't look at the wonders of past and present frantically.
These are look worthy things, look at them with interest and ease.
