COIMBATORE: In a shocking instance of the continuing practice of untouchability, a 17-year-old dalit boy, who entered the sanctum sanctorum of a temple, was allegedly thrashed and abused by a Brahmin(Hindu) priest and his son in Mettupalayam, Coimbatore district, on Friday.

K Vinith had gone to the temple with his sister K Sruthi, 15, an hour before her Class X results were declared on Friday. He entered the sanctum sanctorum, took 'vibhuti' (holy ash) kept on a plate and smeared it on his sister's forehead. The priest and his son, who were not in the sanctum sanctorum, returned then and allegedly slapped him repeatedly.

The duo have been arrested on charges of abuse and causing voluntary hurt under sections of the Indian Penal Code. However, the police are yet to invoke the sections under the anti-untouchability law (The Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act) against them.

Despite the presence of a stringent law and numerous campaigns, complaints of dalits being denied entry into temples abound.

According to Vinith, he had gone to the Siddhi Vinayaka temple near the co-operative housing unit in Mettupalayam around 9.30am to pray for Sruthi, who incidentally scored 71% in the exam. Temple priest S Jambunatha Gurukkal, 49, had left a plate of 'vibhuti' at the entrance.

.
Sad to see such things are happening in Hindu temples.

hope the boy and girl were not raped by hindu brahmin priests

. . .
The priest and his son were booked.

But where from you added the girl and rape.

Because it happens in the madrassas over there so he just concluded even over here things like that is done by religious people.

OT-Very sad both father and son should be thought a lesson...who are they to decide they should not enter the temple.??

Checked out how your Hindus are misbehaving in Pakistan ? It seems that religious misbehaviour and bigotry is a Pakistani norm and an Indian exception. At least Indian cops took action. How often do we read that the Pakistani cops refused to register a FIR in cases of religious intolerance. And btw check out the meaning of the word "abused" before jumping to conclusion. It also means violent attacks such as a slap and not necessarily sexual abuse.

nice to see you commenting on hindu bigotry, i was sick of hearing 'islamic extremism' and 'oppressed minority' from hindu indians

sikhs fight on when to decide for their holi days and they blame on pakistani government to stop their visas, then hindus attack christians and then christians start to cry again

the christians have been accounted for many blasphemies against our quran and islam, by here hindu members and pakistani liberals commented that asia bibi was innocent and oppressed by islamic laws

the thing is the minorities have bigotries in themselves then why blame the muslims, muslims never tortured minorities, the minorities act against the law and they are processed according to the law, so why cry then

ahmadis get killed during war on terror, they start to cry about their oppression but people dont notice how mny muslims get killed each day by bomb blasts and drone attacks

its time the minority realize that whining and cry doesnt help, if they want to go to india, most welcome, but they bigotry will not be accepted in pakistan, making propaganda against us to benefit our enemies will only make them thrown out to india or arabian sea

ooh btw,i agree, things like gujrat massacre was exceptionally wierd and dalits being abused is exceptionally idiotic

. .
Sad Incident. Law enforcement is a must for any modern society to exist.

.
Altough minor incidents of such discrimination abound, its not like 'the' tribal areas. So save it.

the incidents are not minor they happen frequently, and in tribal areas there is no brahmin, dalit difference
