Dalai Lama Turns 78; Speaks about Jihad

YLAKUPPE, India -- Thousands of Tibetans waved banners and danced and schoolchildren sang prayers Saturday at a Tibetan university in southern India in celebration of the Dalai Lama's 78th birthday.

Speaking after an interfaith meeting, the Tibetans' spiritual leader called for love and compassion to promote world peace.

Turning to a Muslim priest, the Dalai Lama said the real meaning of jihad, or holy war, was "to combat our negative emotions."

"Jihad is not beating or killing (others)," he said.

He said 150,000 Tibetans living abroad represent "6 million Tibetans (in China) who have no freedom or opportunity to express what they feel."

The Dalai Lama has lived in exile in India since 1959. Beijing accuses him of seeking to separate Tibet from China, but he says he wants only wide autonomy under Chinese rule.

Word Jihad is from Jihd [singular] which means struggle or to strive. It becomes Jihad when the struggle becomes 'communal'.

1: Jihad bil nafs

[Struggle against one's own wrongful desires ie, intent to commit harm,crime or to give up an addiction]

2: Jihad bil ilm

[Struggle for a cause, through knowledge]

3: Jihad bil Qalam

[Struggle for a cause using publications, and writing]

4: Jihad bil lisan

[Struggle for a cause using lingual ability,speech etc]

5: Jihad bil maal

[Struggle for a cause using material means, and finances.]

6: Jihad bil saif

[Struggle for a cause using armed force, for self defense,national defense and those who can't protect themselves.]



Sixth, is to be used when all of the above five levels have failed. Last being the 'least desired' and only to be exercised when no other means are available.


Dilai lama was just talking about the first level. [The most important level of Jihad in Islamic theology.]
