Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Dalai Lama says he only wants genuine autonomy for Tibet.
  • Dalai Lama also said he might be the last Dalai Lama.
  • The Dalai Lama has suggested previously the title could end with him, when he dies.

BEIJING: Chinese hardliners have parts of their brains missing, exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama said in an interview aired this week, comments likely to infuriate Beijing, which views the Nobel Peace laureate as a dangerous separatist.

The Dalai Lama, who fled into exile in India after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959, denies espousing violence and says he only wants genuine autonomy for Tibet.

The animosity between the two sides, and their rivalry for control over Tibetan Buddhism, is at the heart of the debate about reincarnation.

Speaking to US comedian John Oliver in Dharamsala, where the exiled Tibetan government is based, he also said he might be the last Dalai Lama.

"Very possible," he said. "If I become the last Dalai Lama, I feel very happy."

Tibetan Buddhism holds that the soul of a senior lama is reincarnated in the body of a child on his death.

China says the tradition must continue and its officially atheist Communist leaders have the right to approve the Dalai Lama's successor, as a legacy inherited from China's emperors.

The Dalai Lama has suggested previously the title could end with him, when he dies. China accuses him of betraying, and being disrespectful of, the Tibetan religion, by saying there might be no future reincarnations.

Asked if he was worried China might appoint its own Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader said it would be foolish.

"Our brain usually, you see, has the ability to create common sense," he said. "The Chinese hardliners, in their brain, that part of the brain, is missing."

China's Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

I do not profess to be a big fan of the Dalai Lama (simply not in my orbit of interests) but he's right on this. China has made a mess of its Dalai Lama policy.

Best would have been to simply ignore him and refrain from comment. Instead it yells each time some head of state meets with the DL, threatens quite un-diplomatically all kinds of terrible consequences and gets into a hissing fit that usually only highlights or strengthens the DL's hand. It would be fair to say a great fraction of his current profile is actually due to Chinese efforts. It has also created a harmless way for foreigners to snub China - who simply have to meet him to convey their feelings to Beijing.

Actually China has largely ignored him. But the meeting between him and government officials is the bottom line. Just like India protests against CPEC. India has no impact on CPEC but it has to raise a voice because that is its bottom line.

Indian officials meeting Dalai Lama is just a political revenge on something else Chinese irritated Indian. It has little significance. China won't make political compromise for it anyway.

Well India is legally bound to protest as that act legally is a transgression on territorial sovereignty (notwithstanding the utter lack of practical outcome of such protest) - and I am prepared to see similarities with the vociferous one-china policy.

But how exactly does meeting the Dalai Lama become a breach of Chinese law that the Chinese foreign ministry protests so loudly? My suggestion would be for China to convict him, get an Interpol notice against him and declare him an absconder. Then it would be justified in this course of action.

Why Dalai Lama suggests to end the title with him that he means to betray the usual culture of new Dalai Lama or he is just playing games in this regard. If this is a tradition then must not discontinue like this otherwise, he is creating a vacuum and another issue so the people left behind will suffer of such tradition being discontinued on only wish of this Dalai Lama. Other issues aside but tradition should not be discontinued like this otherwise, the long existing culture is going to end just because of a man. Anyone can correct me in this regard.

Also, providing home to other's separatists means other start to host Indian separatists as such, this precedent will not end in good for the region in the end. Countries sovereignty must be respected and disputed issues be kept aside as such same should not be exploited for impossible gain.

He is not ending it .....the penchan lama he found was abducted by cpc and no one knows where he is now.....according to the Buddhist belief....penchan lama finds the new dalai lama....once the present Dalai lama leaves this world!!

Meeting Dalai Lama isn't the issue. Government officials of a country that has diplomatic tie with China meeting him is. China considers Dalai Lama is the leader of Tibet independence movement. Meeting hims by government officials challenges the notion of one-china policy. Just like as if China officially met with India's insurgent groups.

China never wanted to capture Dalai Lama. He was deliberately let go. Imprisoning him or even making him a martyr could make the rule of Tibet even more difficult.

.
I do hope that, in the near future, Chinese leaders come to their senses and initiate a dialogue with him. This back-and-forth quarrel is childish and unproductive to either side.

This is not easy like this and I can read in article that still it is China that does not want to end the tradition though Dalai Lama is only claiming as such next Penchan Lama is being abducted. controversy is all over in the story that none can believe one side in this regard but I see, China insisting upon continuation of tradition otherwise, by the same logic, whosoever felt opposition in the world, would be blaming others for abduction of next of kin and there goes the xyz tradition, if any. The wise says, not to believe one side story.

By Buddhist tradition Dalai Lama chooses a panchen lama and vice a versa....dalai lama has already chosen panchen and Chinese have abducted him....they simply want to destroy Buddhism and destroy the social fabric of Tibet...so they can expolit the people and resources of Tibet!!

Violence?
There are 138 reported cases of self immolation!!
