"The cyber-attack on Google and other U.S. companies was part of a suspected Chinese government operation launched last year that used human intelligence techniques and high-technology to steal corporate secrets, according to U.S. government and private-sector cybersecurity specialists. "

Good, the Chinese are taking action.....finally

I am sick and tired of the US thinking they can dictate the way people will have to live their lives.....

Google, agreed to the laws in China with regards to censorship and control but decided to violate them and disregard them when they saw more Chinese nationals using Google then ever before......now they want to play the card of Chinese censorship. Well they shouldn't do business in China then, simple as that........dishonourable people like the scum who run Google think they can dictate what the Chinese people must see or know.....

They hould not have gone to China in the first place if they didn;t like THEIR law so much

I agree they should not have acquiesced with China. The more damning part of the article though if you read all 3 pages of it. is China's apparent espionage activities that involved companies besides Google. The Chinese definitely have become very adept at it. If it were up to me I would cut China's access to the world wide web. That would put a severe crimp in their internet espionage.

Yes I know that isn't very realistic......

It says suspected, it didn't say definite, and that is a broad area. I do not believe only china spies on others.

Gez, how people contradict themselves, when they understand squat about world affairs!

Pray, what did Google violate in China?

Dishonorable people like scum who run Google? You, eh, mental?
So only the Chinese dictatorship has the authority to dictate what the Chinese people should see or know?
Oh wait, they do that already, dont they?

errrrrrr stupid, firstly the name is Gazzi, not Gez, get that personal attack right first.

Secondly, China has the State Council Order No. 29 in which China-based Web sites cannot link to overseas news Web sites or carry news from overseas media without separate approval.

That is the law of the land..........like it or not, if you don't then get lost from there....simple as that. It is there country and their laws....WTF does anyone else think they have a better system of running a country and how, the Chinese have their way, period.

Dishonourable....YES, they agreed to the laws in China, then, when their rating and hits went up, suddenly they do not feel obligated to follow them for some odd reason, if that was the case, then they shouldn't have gone their in the first place.

Chinese dictatorship?????????? You are saying that, in India, where Maoists, who are present in 1/3 of all Indian districts are fighting for Communism.

It is the Chinese way of living, if you don't like that then go swivel.

It is of no wonder that many third world countries are turning to China for investment, why because China will come into their countries and help them to sort their probles, abit like what the US doesn, only difference is, the Chinese don't dictate to them how they will sort them out or lives their lives, the China have a policy, to let countries and individual socieities sort their disputes out peacefully, but in their own way, i.e. Jirga, Junta, Council, whichever suits that country........why, because that is their way of life.

Something Indians need to understand before jumping on the bandwagon to bash China happily.....look at your own country first

what did google violate?? how about the law which they agreed to operate under.

and of course the chinese government can set the chinese laws durr. (L2government)(dont like censor? then L2VPN)

you may not like them(laws) but then again i dont like the patriot act but im living under it and by living here i agree to abide by american laws. and you know what, google knew damn well what they were getting into but choose to go in anyways then decides they dont like it after years of profit they decided to violate that agreement which allowed them access in the first place. while i dont agree with the chinese internet censor the google violation of a chinese law is a bigger deal to me. the law should change but this is not the way to do it and i will weep the day that the chinese governemnt (hell chinese people for that matter) bow to(changing its laws) a foreign company coming into china, disregard its local laws while profiting from its people (whether in the name of freedom(modern) or in the name of empire(18-20 century)

I guess the chinese government can fine google for everyday that it decided to violate contract and law. Why not? If a commoner violates law does he not get a fine?

I would remove China from the root servers for one hour a day for one calendar week. I would give China one week of warning that within the following week, China would experience one unannounced hour a day of no Internet access for one calendar week.

But unless you can actually severe all physical connections it will not work

Yes it will. Every country is assigned an IP address. If we remove China's from the root servers, China can still be re-routed through another country at their generosity, but that would alert US and who is going to piss US off just to make good with China and share China's fate on the Internet? This is the actual Internet root servers themselves, not the DNS root servers.

But there are chinese in every country with internet access in the world, they can still go online.

Internet access through mobile?

What about foreign business in china? Political activists in china? Or the poor Tibetans?

I think if it is feasible the US would have done so already.

We are talking about a country, not individuals. When individuals get on-line, he does it through the host country.

Internet access through mobile?
Bandwidth?

What about foreign business in china? Political activists in china? Or the poor Tibetans?
What about them? If the US decide to remove China from the root servers, EVERYONE inside China will have no access.

I think if it is feasible the US would have done so already.
Flawed logic. Just because we can does not mean we must.

And what good would do that?
