The Commonwealth Games haven’t created this kind of a stir in Canada since Victor Davis kicked a chair in front of the Queen.
Say what you want about all the screw-ups and the mess in the athletes village at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, but the controversies have put this event on the map.
Now, every day when Commonwealth Games Canada holds a conference call update, a large crew of reporters from newspapers, radio and television climb aboard to hear the latest. Forget medal count. Bed count is the hot statistic of the moment.
The Games weren’t on the radar of most news outlets before all the calamities — only about 25 Canadians outside the CBC are accredited to cover it in Delhi. But right now, it’s like the week before an Olympics, with everyone wanting a piece of the story.

“I hope that the attention that’s been focused on the Games as a consequence of some of the issues that surround it will continue as we begin to celebrate what I think is going to be some pretty significant accomplishments by our athletes,” said Dr. Andrew Pipe, president of Commonwealth Games Canada.
The Commonwealth Games once occupied a bigger place on the sporting landscape, before the Olympics began alternating every two years and the calendar became crowded with more frequent world championships and other events.
The 1978 Edmonton Games were a big deal, starring the likes of swimmer Graham Smith, gymnast Elfi Schlegel and pentathlete Diane Jones-Konihowski. At the ’82 Games in Brisbane, Australia, swimming ace Alex Baumann set a world record and Davis made headlines for kicking a chair on the pool deck in front of Her Majesty after a relay disqualification.
There’s no question the Delhi Games have a bigger stage than ever now, albeit by dubious circumstances. Organizers had better hope that stage doesn’t collapse
