Cutting-edge technology: DRDO's new priority

India will focus on the cutting-edge technologies denied to it by the West in a new roadmap for building defence technologies to meet strategic as well as asymmetric warfare in the 21st century.

Counter-terrorism will be another priority of the new strategy for the Defence Research and Development Organisation, its director general V K Saraswat announced at a press conference in New Delhi [ Images ] on Saturday ahead of the three-day meeting of heads of DRDO's 52 laboratories in New Delhi from Monday.

He said future weaponry would be a convergence of nano, bio and information technology, with laser-guided systems. Since future warfare would be network centric, he said every system from an individual soldier to the decision-making structure of defence would be made network enabled.

Describing cyber-hacking a major challenge, Saraswat said an emphasis on security of sensitive information was the topmost priority.

"We are making sure the communication network is robust and insulated from external interference," he said. He also disclosed that DRDO is developing alternate fuels to face the energy security wars.

Saraswat, one of India's topmost defence scientist, also announced that the laser technology will be inducted in all weaponry, including tanks, flying objects and guns, in the next 10 to 15 years.

He also disclosed that the DRDO was in the process of building a medium altitude long endurance system of unmanned aerial vehicle project 'Rustam,' after the successful testing of low altitude vehicles named 'Lakshya' and 'Nishant.'

In addition, a micro air vehicle project is at an advanced stage for tactical usage and support to infantry and artillery to monitor the battle grounds.

On the night blindness of tanks, the issue raised by Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor, the DRDO chief said a fourth-generation night vision devise was under development.

He said the biggest challenge for the DRDO scientists is to design technologies for countering the low intensity conflicts and biological, chemical and nuclear war.

From ready meals to eat, energy capsules with one-year shelf life, to hand-held thermal imagers, night sight for machine guns, anti-mine shoes, demolition devices, suffocating smoke ammunition, chilly grenades and blast protection suits were few technologies in the pipeline to counter the low-intensity conflicts, he said.

Saraswat said these would come handy in fighting militancy in Jammu and Kashmir , insurgency in North East and Maoist rebels in various parts of the country.

"We are also looking at developing foliage penetration radar so that movement of vehicles and people moving around in jungles can be easily tracked," said Dr K Sekhar, DRDO's chief controller, research and development

millions of Chinese were shocked after the recent test of Agni-3, for such a 1970s era backward missile, you have to make it weight 50tons to fly just 3000km. you must have some cutting-edge technology in it.

our DF-21's weight is only 17.4ton.

Agni 3 is Indian pride! I am sure their cutting edge technology is better than that...

They must had written wrongly!!! It could be 50kg not 50 tons!!!:azn:

.
I think as technology improves nuclear weapon focus is going to shift from ballistic missile to long range super/hypersonic cruise missiles once breakthrough in efficiency is achieved. Or have a booster stage.

It will start from short range missiles and work its way up.

regards

Indian definition for "cutting-edge" is different from other countries.

Anyone remember Indian super cheap cutting-edge laptop that made big bust on the internet not long ago. later on, turned out to be just a usb flash drive..:>

when most of the defense budget is allocated to buy weapons from foreign sources, do you seriously believe there will be major breakthrough in the coming decade?

Yes, we seriously believe there will be major breakthrough in the coming decade.

1. Before in the past there was buyer and seller relationships.

2. Now, it is Joint development, ToT etc.

3. In the past Indian private manufacturing sector:

a.) was not so strong.
b.) there was money problem.

4. Now Indian private sector:

a.) Builds nuclear reactor.
b.) Missile launchers
c.) Makes ships
d.) Builds hull for Nuke submrine and have state of the art facelities to manufacture submarines and warships.
e.) They have joint venture with best in the world and can build world class weapons systems.
f.) Government have allowed Indian Private Industries to build weapons systems.

5. There are no more any technological sections.

6. Best and finest weapons and technologies are avilable to us as never efore.

7. India have learned a lot from last 30 years of indigenous R&D and survived sections that will fast tracked our advancement.

No. We won't have any major breakthrough cause we are not as super duper intelligent as you can copy anything and create duplicate mobile phones, duplicate cars, duplicate missiles, duplicate aircraft, even duplicate tanks.

Last time I used a chinese mobile it exploded while charging, I wonder how a chinese missile would fare on the landing pad.

Chinese products are famous for working at the time of purchase and once you reach home you realize you've been duped. Their missiles would fail midway.

Anyday DRDO os way better than Chinese.
