Crucial Arjun Mk.2 User Trials From June 1

On May 10, the improved Arjun Mk.2 main battle tank prototype is all set to roll into the Pokhran field firing range in Rajasthan for a week of firing trials. Formal user trials with the Indian Army are scheduled to commence on June 1. Much rides on the results of these trials, and expectations are high. At the very least, an indent -- or conditional intention to buy memorandum -- for 124 Mk.2 tanks depends on the tank performing on expected lines during these (and potentially, future rounds of) trials.

The Arjun Mk.2 trials come just weeks after Russia displayed an improved version of the T-90 tank at Defexpo 2012, and the timing is no coincidence. Russia has made it all but officially clear that the T-90 is superior in all respects to the Arjun, though this was hardly borne out in comparative trials between the Russian tank and an Arjun Mk.1 in 2010 (the DRDO says the Russian tank was uniformly drubbed). It isn't difficult to see, however, that the Arjun's loss is the T-90's gain, and vice versa. It is at this juncture and this atmosphere that the Arjun Mk.2 trials are set to commence, and for these reasons that they will be watched closely by stakeholders.

The heavier Arjun Mk.2 incorporates some 93 improvements on the Mk.1 tank, 124 of which are already in operational service in two tank regiments in the Army.

The T-90 is better than the Arjun? Me thinks not. MK.1 proved itself superior in almost every aspect and the Mk.2 is just in another league competed to T-90. It is hard for the 40 ton T-90 to compet with the 60 ton MBT Arjun Mk.2.

hope they like it...though i have some objection about rifled gun.don't know why they even bothered about 120 rifled gun when smoothbore is the best choice???anybody knows the reason???

Rifled tank guns are much more accurate.They can also fire HESH rounds.
Smmothbore guns last longer as wear and tear of barrel is much less.Also using SABOT round wear and tear in smoothbore is much less than that in rifled cannons.

though arjun's rifled gun is much improved,but still life of rifled gun is lower than smoothbore.also,smoothbore's ammo is plenty available in the market,but not rifled guns.right???though hesh is a good multipurpose round,but still western countries choose smoothbore.now,only question remains,can arjun fire HE and APFSDS rounds accurately???because it is too costly to fire them properly though rifled guns..(though i heard india modified them so that wear and tear of rifled guns can be reduced)

Yes it can fire them.The gun was modified.The british have always prefered rifled tank guns from centurions to their current challenger tanks.

i think Arjun Mk3 should have a modified, smaller Black eagle or T 95 turret

this way it will become FMBT with weight around 55 tons

any way Mk2 will be much better than Mk1

Well that's what has happened, current inventory of IA armored corps- T-72UPG (until 2015/16),T-90S, Arjun MK.1. Soon Mk.2 Arjun and later FMBT by 2018/19.

Not true. The decision to deploy 124 immediately, and perhaps another 124 subsequently, was taken quite some time back, after head-to-head trials of the two models.
