CRPF to have own intelligence wing: Director General

Agartala, Apr 11(ANI): Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is taking new strategies and forming its independent intelligence wing to be better equipped in its fight against insurgents and Maoist, CRPF Director General, K. Vijay Kumar, has said.

The paramilitary force, besides law and order and counter-insurgency duties, is at present largely engaged in anti-Maoist activities in different states of India.

“We are in the process of forming an intelligence wing. We already have a special officer who joined as the intelligence head and various intelligence trained people have been put together. The work is going on,” Kumar said at the Agartala airport.

Kumar, who is on his maiden visit to the state to take stock of the insurgency situation, said that the scenario in Tripura has moved in the positive direction.

Expressing concern over the growing Maoist activities in different states, the Director General said that his force is also getting better training for fighting against the Maoist.

“We are definitely sharpening our tactics, we are improving our operational caliber, we are watching what the other side (Maoist) is doing and we are giving lot of thrust on the training,” Kumar said.

He said that at least sixty battalion of the CRPF are engaged in counter-Maoist activities spread over different states.

On the issue of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, the Director General said that the situation at present is by and large peaceful with the joint and coordination counter-insurgency operation by the CRPF and local police.

“At the moment it is fairly under control, everything is quite; local police and we are working together,” Kumar said.

The CRPF is the largest paramilitary force in the world with 218 battalions besides various establishments.
